  • White fuel smoke on start-up

As I have posted elsewhere I bought a 2008 GXL D4D in September with 110,000kms on it. I had a service done at 115,000kms in January and had all fuel filters replaced, air filter replaced, changed transfer case oil, new brakes all around etc. I reported white smoke sometimes on start up. Injectors were tested and all within limits. Was told to check when smoke appears.

Took the car out today for its 120,000kms service and asked for the oil pick up to be checked and also for the glow plugs to be tested. I reported that over summer there was no smoke but as the Canberra temperature dropped over night and I started the car at temperatures below 15 degrees I get a cloud of smoke for about 5-10 seconds.

Picked up the car this evening and was told oil pick up screen clear and glow plugs reported as fine. I suggested that this would seem to indicate an injector seal is leaking fuel into a cylinder.

On my next service at 125,000kms I will have a water filter put in and have the injectors tested again.

If this is an injector seal what are the implications in the short term - i.e. between now and next service?

I would assume it is the seals based upon the Symptoms. If its number one that has failed, you may notice it worse when parked nose downhill. Major issue is that the sump can block. If you feel its not so bad that it won't block it in 5000Ks, then i assume your fine. Personally we have no idea how long you can 'stretch the friendship' as we just get it done ASAP. It may be fine for 30,000ks, might be fine for 300 > i personally dont have the experience to answer that side of your question.

Thanks. Always parked on level. I had the oil pickup screen checked and they tell me all is fine in the sump. Surprised that there was no smoke this morning mind you.

Once again very cold start and no smoke. Yesterday did trip up into the first behind Paddy's River some low range driving.

            Just a query.
I replaced all four injectors in my 2007 1KD FTV in February this year. I still notice a slight vibration at idle (when it is about 600 which is normal for my car). When I start the car in the mornings (the idle speed is about 800) there is no vibration for about 5 to10 minutes till the engine warms up but the vibration comes back when the idle revs drop to 600. The vibration also disappears when I switch on the aircon (the idle speed is about 700). MAS was cleaned about a week ago. No change.
I checked the injector specs the they read:
            Injector 1: +1.4
            Injector 2: - 0.4
            Injector 3: - 0.4
            Injector 4: - 0.3

Any reason for the rough idle? Is there anything I can do to rectify the problem?

Mine's a 1kz but I had similar symptoms last winter. It would start OK if left on tarmac but if left on grass overnight - I'm guessing because of the slightly cooler temp-it would rough start with white smoke. I had new glow plugs but found the glow fuse had failed.Just wondering if they would have checked the fuse when they checked the glow plugs.

                Engine mounts?
                Egr valve clogged?

Mine does this in neutral at most temps, worse on cold mornings while in gear.

Normally you wouldn't associate a rough idle with the readouts that you have there, normally its not really detectable until it gets to about 2.5 and worse... Possible for you to upload a little vid?

The butterfly and EGR valves were OK.
Inspection of engine mounts too were OK according to the mechanic.

The idling speed is hovering around 550-600. Is there anyway I can increase it to around 700 ? Would a reset of the ECU help? If so how do I set about doing this?

                      550 is really quite low...

To ECU reset. Easiest way is to disconnect the battery, connect the two terminals (Wiring harness / NO BATTERY) and turn the lights on. by connecting the two terminals together you complete the circuit, headlights on drains the capacitors in the ecu. Therefore, when all reconnected to a power source, the ECU goes back into self learn mode...

                      Hope this helps

Thanks. I'll try this as a last resort.

Pretty sure they didn't. Have just been on a trip covering 5 days and 750kms. No smoke at all since I reported it until the morning after I got back. Then a small amount - temp about 13 degrees.

No change. The idling speed is still low. I did a 600km trip today and the fuel consumption is the same 8.9km/L and the power too seems ok.
Could it be an issue with the fuel supply pump?

It really looks like it would have to be something to do with the ECU.

If it knows the RPM and its targeting something higher, it should have the ability to play with enough things to do it... Do you have a Tech Stream? would be interesting to know what the injection volume is like and whether the car is even trying to lift the rpm...
