Work mate just rang up GIO and filled out the required form, and they fixed it, they were on the road south of Darwin, car and van towed to Darwin, were they stayed for approx 3 weeks until it was fixed and they were on the way again. Only cost him his excess and NRMA premium road assist picked up most of the tab for accomodation etc

awaiting insurance assesment and praying like a born again Christian that they approve it and cover the damages.

Stressful couple of days for us lately.
Sorry to hear that Mate. will be excellent if your insurance covers it.
I believe another well know forum members D4D has also failed as well...
      They are dropping like flys.
I can see Toyota just hoping they dont have to do a recall. Imagine the cost to replace for all those D4D's seals out there....

Insurance could find no evidence of fuel contamination, so I'm on my own unless I can prove otherwise. Awaiting the engine to be pulled down to see the extent of the damage but am looking at an $8,000 - $10,000 repair bill. Ouch.

When they take the injector feedback values, do they remove the piping or injectors?

I am more concerned if anyone that works on the car at service, does a good job. I.E: if they have to touch anything in the fuel system and break open the sealed system, removing filters/pipework/injectors etc, that is working fine when it goes in. Are they meticulous that they don't allow any contaminants into the fuel system. It seems to be a common story, car goes for service, blows up within 10,000klm.

I do all my servicing, making sure the engine bay has been recently washed or is clean and really make sure I don't get dirt near anything. I don't think service centers take the care as they are under the pump to get the job done.

I wish you all the best!

          Cheers Brad.

I'm with you on that one. Especially after my one and only experience at a Toyota stealership. Really these people are all about the turnover and only see customers as cash cows. Fortunately I have a good mechanic I can take my vehicles to.

From what I've seen, pigs...... Even changing fuel filters, this is where you need to be soooo careful & clean.

Feedback values are done by plugging a computer into the cars ecu. Not a mechanical job at all. But I understand your concerns of mechanics abilities and care. That's why I service my cars myself (plus the cost savings), if I do it I know exactly what has/hasn't been done.

Just got an update from the mechanic. It has a cracked/holed piston as suspected, no other internal damage (what a relief) and he actually commented that its been well maintained going by the condition of the internals (with exception to said piston)

Been a while so time for a bit of an update. Got the prado back 3 weeks ago and am loving driving it again. Performance is on par with how it ran before, not driving hard as its still running in. Although the last 2 days it has seemed a lot more torquey, maybe its my imagination, maybe its improving as it runs in. Done over 1000km already so its back at the mechanics for an oil change.

Anyway, got some pics of the busted piston:

Nice crack. Good to hear your back in your Prado. Mine took 8 weeks to fix.

Looks like I am a new member of the D4Detonation club. Car is on transport from Katherine to Brisbane after the motor failed while we where in Kakadu. I run scangauge and noticed the temperate increased to 94 from the usual 86-89 and then smoke then pop pop pop at 2500 rpm. Turned off immediately but the damage is done.
We had the injectors replaced at 150000 after the cold noise but now with 200000 we have expensive problems.

                          Bugger.

Did the vehicle have any symptoms? Knocking? How long since values were checked?

Sorry to hear that mate, hate when things like that happen whilst on holidays.

Can you tell us what injectors went in at 150k kms? Baileys?Denso? Were the seats/sheets replaced from the copper to the new ones?

Used the denso new units with the new style seals. Have ordered the Bailey units for this rebuild. Valves were checked at 150 as well.

The cold knock had started again but only days before we left. Not as bad as the first time but this was possibly the start. We towed the camper for 3500 km before the failure so who knows what really happened.

Photos to come when motor pulled down.
