  • 120 1KZ rough start/idle

    Hi guys,

New to site and wondering if anyone has a solution to a problem I have with my 120 . cold starts are becoming a problem , not every time but engine starts rough and blows blue/white smoke for a few seconds then settles down to perfect idle , engine has plenty of power I have replaced glow plugs I do run two fuel filters as well . I recently took intercooler off and cleaned throttle body was a bit greasy ??? . vehicle has 160k with auto gearbox , went up the coast last Friday 500 k run never missed a beat ?? am hoping someone can help I am pretty handy with a spanner just want to explore my options before sending to a diesel mechanic

    Cheers phil

This took a few seconds, maybe it's of some help: http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/vi...?f=54&t=144524

FWIW my MAP sensor was thoroughly cleaned along with the throttle body and it did make a huge difference. 10+ years of EGR crud and age had taken a toll. It'll possibly be some sort of sensor somewhere.!

Maybe people should read all of the post including it's title before they get upset about people asking questions. Yes, there is a thread about D4Ds. This is not a D4D. There's certainly not a sticky about the 1kz. There's also no information on the 4wd action thread that is any use.

Anyway, to actually answer the questions and attempt to help someone out, have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor? There's info on this for the D4d but it's far more sketchy for the 1kz. Some posts suggest there isn't one but I can tell you there definitely is one. I have had a bit of a rough idle for a while which is why I looked into this. Anyway, on the 1kz just after the intercooler on the right hand bend is a big brass nut. Undo the nut and carefully take out the MAF sensor. Don't touch it. Then clean with MAF Sensor Cleaner which is a special spray that you can buy from the auto shops. I did mine and I have definitely noticed a difference. You could start with this.

My next question regards Injectors. Did you have them replaced at 150 thou? Or have you ever had them replaced? They can be a cause of the issue too. They're not overly expensive to have replaced and certainy nothing like the D4D. A mechanic is changing mine with reconditioned injectors for $600. So, check and clean the MAF, and then consider an injector swap.

              Hope this helps.

Thread title was changed to its current (more meaningful) title and moved to the correct section.

hey thanks again , to clarify if it was me I wasn't getting upset just getting to the point . have only had prado since 140k , have had hiluxs and turbo diesel landcruisers before . I did while I had intercooler off clean the sensor ( is it the one coming off elbow of intercooler ) into throttlebody ? . the prado has a good service history major service at 110k but no mention of injectors.

Yes, that's the MAF. What did you clean it with exactly? Depending on what you cleaned it with (i.e., water, fuel, WD40 etc) that's probably a no-no and could be the problem. You need a good electrical contact cleaner or even better, the MAF cleaner mentioned.

It's worth checking your glow plug fuse also, that you're getting power to the plugs.
