  • Engine revving high/not changing past 4th gear when cold

I've been experiencing this for quite a while now (through winter) and wanted to know if it's a feature put in place by Toyota or something I should be concerned about.

Whenever I start my car up on cold mornings and hit the road, travelling at 100-110kph for sustained periods of time, my 1kd-ftv w/ auto 5 speed will never seem to change into 5th gear and stay at the 2.5k-3.0k rpm range instead and the only thing I can attribute it to is the engine being cold. Any one have any extra info on this or ideas why it's doing it?

    Cheers

    Mine does it also.

I'm not sure of the specifications yet, but I have noticed a few makes including toyotas that hold back from overdrive till its up to a certain temperature.

I'd say normal, but hopefully somebody can add more.

It isn't the idle up as that will only work if the engine is below a certain temp and doesn't operate when you are driving as is my understanding.

As long as it's normal I won't be too worried.

I thought it was the trans sticking to 'top gear' and just waiting for the fluid to reach optimum temp before allowing it to shit into overdrive?

Just rang an old work mate runs an auto tran shop. He said it's programmed like that from Toyota so that it gets to it's optimum operating temperature quicker. He said its approx 65D cel before it will allow it to change into top gear. He said you may also notice it holds it's gears longer when cold. He has a Prado himself and been in the game over 20 years.... Cheers Steve
