  • Is this rust in on my engine?

I noticed this the very day I picked it up (3 weeks ago), but today I spotted it again and rubbed my finger along it. It appears to be a rust coating. I wonder if others see this.

I'll bring this up with my dealer when I drop it in for it's first service after Easter, but in the meantime, I am curious if this is 'normal'.

In the two pics below, it shows a rust coated pipe and a close-up of the same. This is driver's side of the engine.

    Thanks,
    LFaR.

this must have been an optional extra, how much did you pay.

Looks like a Cast iron Exhaust manifold. So its going to get hot and Paint wont really stay on it. (Unless a HTC is used).
I would suggest it is certainly rust and probably wont go away easily. The vehicles are shipped by Sea so it has seen a nice bit of salt air already, and would have had a wash down at the PD department before delivery.

I highly doubt Toyota will warrant anything on it due to the rust..

So this would be considered 'normal' on a brand new D4D?

It just surprises me, but I also have a few cast-iron camp cookers which have this familiar coat of rust, and it goes no further.

I would guess every D4D would be similar?

          Hey LFaR,

Mine has the same extravagant finish. I think you'll find this normal to see a cast exhaust manifold rust like this... Although I was surprised to see the amount of rust on mine from delivery also.

I don't think it's too much to worry about... As TP said the only way to protect it is to get it HPC coated which costs $$. The good thing about HPC is it will look nice and shiney and will also keep engine bay temps down. Probably not really worth it unless you can't stand the rusty look. If you look at cars with painted mild steel extractors, they still end up rusting after a while.

Yeah I know what you're saying. Rust on a brand new vehicle. Whats up with that?? I've just checked mine which I picked up Nov last year. Slightly less rust than you've got but certainly has a nice rusting finish on it. As the guys say, it's a cast iron part that gets very hot. Most exhaust manifolds suffer the same fate. Even on a brand spanking new vehicle I wouldn't be surprised to see rust there. Cast iron parts like that are expected to get a little rusty as part of their normal life. Unless you protect them with special coatings like the guys have said. But, they're fairly chunky and it's going to take a lot of rusting before they need replacing. My 400,000 km 88 Hilux that I recently traded (on the Prado) still had it's original exhaust manifold.

              Hi LFAR
This sort of mild surface corrosion on exhaust manifolds in a reasonably high performance HCCI engine is not a problem, you can always spray nice white HT paint onto the exhaust manifold as I used to do on headers and extractors with my inefficient petrol 500hp V8's but why bother.

This type of corrosion deposit is not a problem for the life of your engine, on some of the medium size Hi Speed marine diesel engines you can observe the exhaust gas flow through the white hot exhaust headers into the turbo chargers at full song (MCR). Sorry for the crap just using an example to indicate some of the nice hot exhaust gas temps required to make these engines a little bit efficient.

                hey LFaR

Old wives tale of spraying the manifolds with WD40 .

I had a mate that rebuilt motors ... and to make them look pretty
when completed ... each one was given a shot of WD40 and a quick wipe off .

But given the temp's on the manifold ... how long would this coating last ????

Here's a idea ... make your own ! How hard can it be??

At the end of the day all exhaust manifolds will have some rust on them. At the end of the day it doesnt matter really. I have worked on some old john deeres which had manifolds held together by rust. We would often have to send heads and manifolds to the specialist engineers in Perth to get manifold and turbos separated.
I once rewelded an old rusty chamberlain exhaust manifold and it kept on going. I believe its still going.
Dont worry about the rusty manifold, you will have more to worry about soon once you have taken the 4wd off the black top and into some mud holes.

                  Cheers

                    rust is rust

G,day guys oh and ladies !!

what are you all worried about ??? Rust oh please this is a good thing !!

seriously I,m an Fitter engineer and regarding rust on cast iron this is due to the Metal refinery reducing the amount of alloys in the cast which will produce that rust colour effect unlike our storm water drains where the cast iron never rush etc !! anyway regarding the rust on manifold this would take approx 20 years to rust through unlike mild steel which can take less than a year depending on the quality of mild steel!

I would,nt bother painting it as once you remove those manifold bolts you will required to have a new set install as well torque set other wise over time you will have warp manifold !

and if you are desperate to have painted its best to have them sand blasted before painting as this will avoid the rust layer with oxygen build up between the paint and the manifold !!

at the end of the day Lets just all boast that we have rust on our Prado with pride !!

                    8)    ops: 8)

                      Rust on the manifold

                      G'day guys

As a fitter I see this every day. It doesn't matter what engine, 2l to 60l; This is very normal. It comes from the make up of the casting steel used to make manifolds. It won't wear prematurely or anything like that. Rest easy guys.
