Injector volumes and engine oil pickup should be checked at every service.

Lost a bit of faith in diesel Prado's though.
      Good news.

But to be fair it's more an issue with common rail diesels in general. Just search the inter webs and you'll see Nissan, Jeep, Mercedes etc with rattle and injector issues

Once again Toyota display a completely different set of policies across Australia. Some get the problem fixed at no charge, some get it fixed under warranty and some get totally shafted. Glad for good outcome for you Rod B.

Make sure they do all injectors and not just the out of spec ones...

                  Great result Rob.

Yes, this problem is a common rail diesel issue, not just HiLux and Prado. Dr Google sees EVERYTHING...

My mechanic was telling me to change out an Injector in the new Merc's, they have to hook the injector up to a chain block or similar and lift the whole car up and wait until the seal breaks (not sure if he meant vacuum seal) and drops the car. Obviously not 6 feet in the air, but they use the weight of the car to extract the injectors.

Bahaha, its actually caused from the same sort of nozzle seat (washer) issues that we have in 1KDs. But as the injector is external of the oil system, rather than the carbon infiltrating the oil, it just gets stuck around the injector. Basically it uses the internal firing pressure of the engine to keep cramming material in there until nothing fits, but of course, you can move the injector either!

Its very common to have to half disassemble the injector in the head and use the internal threads of the injector with a puller and a bloody massive slide hammer or similar... Not mmuch is left of it by the time they're out however LOL...

Like has already been stated > its a common rail issue.

Yeah my mechanic always talks about mercs when ever we talk injectors, he reckons much more expensive and much bigger issue than the Toyota situation.

                            Cheers Andrew

so if this is a 'common ' common rail issue, doles anyone still manufacture a diesel engine that doesn't have these injector issues?

Unfortunately not (well at least to my knowledge).

Please don't go blaming the vehicle or injection system manufacturers (although there local reps haven't been golden) - I firmly believe that CRI technology wouldn't have been out as early as it was if it was left to them to make the decision. Reality is, these guys have to meet emissions standards, whilst improving efficiency AND improving performance (otherwise they cannot sell cars).
Its the emission standards (and to a lesser extent - us as a demanding consumer body) are the reason these things were put onto the market before they were fully reliable.

Its also worth noting that i really do not believe that when these engines + fuel systems are stressed they way they are, we can no longer expect 300,000kms out of a set of injectors. twice the pressure, 4 times the operations... It has to take its toll...

Anyway, moral of the story is here: RodB - good on you and well done. Many others have not been as fortunate...
