  • To those who had a D4D that failed - did you take preventative steps?

    Hi all.

I am considering buying a 120 Prado in the next few months or so. Basically it's come down to whether or not a 1KZ/4spd auto will do, or if I want to take a risk on a seemingly more capable and efficient (but less reliable) 1KD/5spd auto combo.

A question to all of those out there that have experienced D4D engine failure - did you take preventative steps?

Were you keeping an eye on injector feedback? Had you been checking the oil pickup? Was there a secondary filter installed?

Or were you just trusting a Toyota dealer or mechanic to keep things hunky dory.

I really like the idea of a Prado - they make sense in a lot of ways - and are my preferred option against a 100 or a Patrol. I am just quite concerned about the reliability issues and petrol isn't an option for my usage case.

I have had feedback from many unfortunate owners.

Mainly a lot of trusting Toyota service = no feedback checks.
They don't check pick ups either.
There are some that had extra fuel filters, but often still trusted T to let them know things, things that don't get checked as part of a service.

If you are on a programme you have pretty good odds.
They are fairly reliable when on a programme.

Buy a high Klm's vehicle, keep the change for an engine. If t goes forever you win. If it pops a new motor is great & still much cheaper than a new vehicle you win. Put new Injectors in it right away.

    Good luck.

Was very aware of the 120 D4D issues before I purchased my 2008 GXl second hand in 2013 with 110,000 kms on it.

First thing I did at the 115,000 service ( I have it done every 5,000 kms) was to have the injector values checked (in spec but 1 was close about 2.2), replaced all of the fluids, brakes, filters etc. Normal service at 120,000. Getting some smoke on start up - replaced injectors at 125,000. Normal service at 130,000 in January but about to go on a big 11,000 kms trip starting next week so had the car serviced early at 133,200 - had all fluids and filters replaced and had a secondary (or is it 3rd) fuel filter system installed as there are two in the system already. Had Fuel Manager installed and checked the first battery - looking dodgy - had it replaced.

Confident with my preventive maintenance strategy. And I love my 120 to bits.

Should have said - who doesn't do preventative maintenance. Works all the time. Used to fly light aircraft - that is the whole philosophy light and heavy.

May be pulling my leg but my Toyota Dealer service guy claims to check injectors and pick up and change injector seals when doing the valve adjustments etc.

Preventative maintenance (you or a trusted mechanic) and knowing what to look for are the key.

They should be liable now if the blocked intake causes any issues. It probably doesn't get cold enough up there to do a real cold morning check on the injectors.
