diesel rattle in D4D Prado

The engine is running rough and it is clattering even when warm, which I am putting down to the dodgy injector cause it never souunded like this when it was warm prior to the fitment of it.

I just have to wait for the phone call from the tech who is going to be doing the work as to when he receives the 4 new injectors. Then I will be bringing it back down to Adelaide to get the work done.

might be going over old ground....but has Toyota said continued driving (as is) may result in engine damage? And if so, it will be covered under warranty?

Are they also able to guarantee the repalcement injectors will be trouble free - that is, they recognise the problem and have designed/produced different injectors?

What im (and probably other D4D) owners are concerned about is that are we all going to have this problem at some stage - or - the problem is isolated???

If its a time-bomb - then like yourself, i'll think very carefully about keeping the car or at least getting something from Toyota saying the problem will be covered at anytime - which they probably cannot do.

Definitely not isolated. they said that there is every chance it will re-occur.
They certianly have not said that I will not be doing the same thing again in another 20,000 km.

Interesting.....where does that stand with warranty....surely if someone has an issue and it repeats itself (even outside of the warranty timeframe) - and its well known - it is covered?

if not, id be seeking something in writing that has it covered for ever.....if Toyo cannot do this, then maybe legal advice???

I find it interesting that Toyota seem to be expecting more problems or at least not stating that the problem is fixed. Yet I was told (albeit unofficially) to change the fuel filter at every 10k service. I missed out on that bit of information at the last service so will be going back to get the filter changed and I will dissect the old filter for a look see. You would think that Toyota would change these filters this as a matter of course during services if the problem was dirty fuel or moisture inherent in our diesel. $30 filters are a damn site cheaper than $1k plus injectors.

From memory when the 200 series was debuted here in Oz the diesels all went AWOL for a few weeks and if memory serves it was a fuel pump or injector problem, I wonder...

Right now I don't know what to believe or what to expect other than we will run one brand of fuel only through the car and meet all the requisite services plus extra filter changes to try to cover our bases in case we have one of the affected Prados. I will also investigate an aftermarket filter/water trap.

Just a thought... I wonder if those with the noisy engine would be able to put up a video. Maybe comparing it to cold-start with warm-engine. I'd like to have an idea just how bad this must sound. It will be something I will be listening for in the future and it's better if I know what it sounds like.

Theres an idea.... I take a video camera with me tomorrow morning when i have the Toyota Technician with me in the car as well....to prove there IS a rattle..!!! I wonder if that will spook them? Could show we are dead serious!

Well I could have done that before they changed out my worst injector had I of thought about it.

I am sure there are others out there that have the same cold rattle that could do it.

I hate to make a suggestion for yet another thread regarding this problem but......I would suggest a thread to only post at how many k's and other key points at which point this started?

Bullet points:

- how many k's when rattle started?
- Did Toyo advise a particular injector was bad? if so which number?
- have you been asked to change your filter more frequently than suggested in the service manual?
- have you been requested to continue driving until repaired?
- what is the build date on your Prado D4D?

etc etc...no comments just basic bullet points so they can be consolidated. I can see this going much further but with some good statistics I do feel it is hard to ignore. :idea: [/quote]

Dropped it into dealer this morning and took technician for a run in it. He said "i know this car..this is the one we have referred to Toyota Technical for their ideas"... so the $%^&* Service advisor had me do the bus thing and coax the missus to drive me there this morning for NOUGHT! The Techo said he DID hear the noise... (unlike his earlier statement that the Techo could not replicate it) and this morning it made it as well..although it was raining and the noise in the car from the rain meant the rattle was more subdued. The techo was much more forthcoming than the @#$%^Service advisor, who said they did all the diagnostics and it seemed the injectors were all "within spec"and they could not find any fault codes, hence had to refer it to Toyota. seems thats the way it happens these days... if it shows nothing on the computer... theres nothing wrong! The Techo is however making some enquiries for me to other dealers and Toyota to see the next move. For me, I think I am going to take my reports and head to another dealer closer to home to try. Basically, if nothing materialises, i will drive it till it "shits itself" ...

As for video posing...just a small intro like "Hi, Im xyz from Pradopoint, an enthusiastic and reputable group of Prado owners - we would like your comments on the D4D rattle which we as a group are taking a class action against Toyota and to help our appeal, to advertise it on Today Tonight, A Current Affair as well as 60 minutes."

In fairness to Toyota other car manufacturers CRDs are in the same boat when it comes to the injectors. We are only really concetrating on the D4D cause that is what we own but the other CRDs are in the same boat.

What annoys me the most I guess is that it would be a simple thing to install a CAV filter as a standard fitting with the warning light in the cabin. At least that would give us an early detection of crap fuel etc.
