diesel rattle in D4D Prado

In fairness to Toyota other car manufacturers CRDs are in the same boat when it comes to the injectors.

Agree and with all of the cars being sold in diesel this will become more evident soon.

What annoys me the most I guess is that it would be a simple thing to install a CAV filter as a standard fitting with the warning light in the cabin. At least that would give us an early detection of crap fuel etc.

....and you would think that something to this level would be part of the strategy to resolve the problem.

Toyota have their own filter with a warning light, why isn't this good enough, surely their engineers would know what size particle will cause damage to the injector, therefore they would have speced the toyota filter accordingly. I still can't understand why the toyota filter doesn't protect the engine from dirty fuel, thought thats why they build cars with filters and why they tell us its very important to replace them at regular intervals!!!

Just a pity it is nowhere near good enough to save the injectors and pump. Why they did not go for a better filter system goes beyond reasoning.

Update from this mornings collection of Prado from Dealer. Was left overnight to do 40K service and when started this morning, the Service Advisor suddenly realises its making a noise! Eureka! So, it rattles its head off most of the way back to work, THEN as i accelerate a bit briskly... a LOUD noise like a slipping belt! So , I do a U-Turn and head back across town to dealer. Pickup yet another Foreman from the workshop to take him for a drive. At least this time the nose stays... very much like a slipping belt, but of course the serpentine belt is auto adjust... so cant be that.. Stopped on side ofroad to look underbonnet. Couldnt make the noise again under loading the engine on the brakes... belt looked ok.. but then drove off again and noise returned.

Dropped car back at workshop.. so far lost most of the day at work.. they gave me a beatup corolla loan car, as they have "no idea"what the noise is.

However... INTERESTINGLY... when you get to talk to the Techos... there are HEAPS of complaints coming in about the Cold Rattle.. the guy this morning says some of the worst ones he has heard are from people who dont even complain about it... just think its normal. I guess if we are on PRadopoint forum we take a bit more interest in our trucks.. but the average punter may not. Techos comment was "Toyota still hasnt given us any instructions about what to do with the cars that rattle - we are waiting for them to tell us whats the go"

There will no doubt be lots of counter claims and other spins on the story, but bottom line has to be... there is SOMETHING happening.. causing this problem. I guess we continue to have the matter investigated and drive on during warranty hoping it will get sorted!

Masso, Mav and others - great updates and thanks heaps!! Looks like there is at least some record being kept at Toyo camp of a problem which for the rest of us D4D owners (and maybe other vehicles if not just Toyo related) could assist us if we need to make a claim.

Please continue to feed us updates as you are made aware and able or willing to.

THEN as i accelerate a bit briskly... a LOUD noise like a slipping belt!

Gees Masso, mine did something similar this morning but it was not a whine like a belt it was more like when an auto transmission clonks down a gear when you accelerate, except I was idling and not moving. Then it was like I had a lumpy cam installed with the Prado rocking from side to side. Only lasted till it warmed up but I fear that my engine problems are getting worse.

Still waiting for the call to say they have received the injectors.

Toyota does have a procedure to follow for the D4D rattle and it requires the dealership to do a range of tests then those results go to Toyota who then give the authority for the swap if any of the injectors are out of tolerance. They also send the authority through to Denso to supply the dealership with the injectors.

I will add that the tech that is doing my injectors when they arrive told me that not all dealerships have the expertise to do the injector change out or the equipment to run the testing. He quite frankly said that if the dealership had not done one before he would be loathed to get them to do it. Apparantly it is a very involved process to do the change out and literally an all day job.

When the swapped out just the worst one of mine it took 3 hours.

Well the tech doing mine seems to be of the opinion that it will in all likelihood re-occur.

As to what Toyota corporate will do beyond the warranty is anyones guess, I would think that if it becomes an ongoing concern then they will have to cover it outside of the warranty period. Too be honest I am not sure what Toyota can do except retrofit a new/better filter system.

mav - Have Toyota stated the problem is definitely 100% fuel related and fixable by the installation of an after-market product?

If so, i would personally be very careful about "personally" installing such a device to eliminate the problem.

Fix on the way....supposedly.

Booked the car in for 10k service today (with a toyota dealer) and asked them to check that the injectors are still in spec as I've already had to have one replaced with only 3k on the clock.

Got talking to the guy about this problem generally. His answer was that Toyota are saying it is the poor quality of our fuel in general. I asked him if there was any brand in particular that I should look for - he said they're all about the same.

Further to this he said that Toyota are a fair way down the path to a solution that will most likely involve a different injector and that it should be available soon (I'm guessing a matter of months but he wouldn't be pinned down on numbers). He couldn't say if it would be replaced by recall or as required.

He also indicated that according to Toyota the problem is only manifesting itself as a noise and that the car would be safe to drive without damaging the engine so please be patient as there was nothing to worry about.

He also said that this problem is limited to the upgraded D4D motor that was introduced with the Prados. Apparently the older D4Ds have a different injector that isn't prone to this problem. I've been told (but not confirmed myself) that these are identifiable by the number of wires feeding into the injector - the newer ones have 6 wires whereas the older ones have 3.

While I'm sure some of what he said was just spin, to date this particular dealer has provided pretty good service so I have no reason to doubt what has been said. Overall I was encouraged that Toyota are taking action but understandably keeping it a bit quiet as to not raise expectations prematurely.

Michael, I will try and capture what mine is sounding like at the moment. I will do it tomorrow morning and see if my recorder will pick it up. I will then upload it to mediafire for folks to download. Mine is not as bad as it was due to the really bad injector having been swapped out but it is still noticeable.

Well another piece to the puzzle, thanks any120. So we are slowly getting to the bottom of the problem. I wonder if the reason my injectors were held back from being shipped to the dealer had anything to do with the new style injector being available in a couple of weeks? Things that make you go hmmmmm!
