diesel rattle in D4D Prado

Well skywalker. I am agreeing with you on this.
I was talking with a bloke at my local diesel shop last week who owned a KZJ120 also.
As we were comparing cars i noticed how his car was much quieter than mine.
After discussing the comparisons, the only difference was that I had the fuel pre filter fitted.
I immediately bypassed it and am now using the OEM filter only.

Mate. It is a good 20% quieter. The injectors are not ticking as much and she starts easier and idles like a kitten purring.
Even the gear knob shake has halved!
Even the missus said it's running better.

Im making the call.
The racor R230R starves the 1KZ pump of the fuel flow that it needs!
It may have the correct flow rate, but maybe the pump doesnt have the balls the suck fuel through 2 filters?

I challenge other PPers to bypass their pre filter and report back with what they find!!!

I might be different, due to an engine re-build, but even with my FM 100 30 micron per-filter is quiet. But also running with injectors from Baileys as well. My mechanics have told me cab noise is similar to the petrol Landcruisers thath they service. Even his Hilux (same year) is louder in comparison.

From the reading I've done here (and can't recall the exact flow requirements) flow and micron size are big factors. IMHO layman's knowledge, I wouldn't be going smaller than 30 microns.

There are many views on the topic of extra fuel filters

We all have our experiences

The R12s (1/2 the size of a r230) I ran was fine - although it required changing at 8,000km
I have since uprated to the larger R230 unit with a 2micron filter fitted after the OEM and have a very quiet 1KD

The biggest issue I have found which effects engine noise is air leaks into the fuel supply line

Don't think so, I think it might have been a combination of things. Not a big deal, though I reckon if I were driving and the tanks switched over it would be a non-issue.

Just odd timing, I reckon. I'll have to see how I go when the tanks switch again.

The main tank is kept full from the sub tank, this is done by the use of a "jet pump" which uses fuel returning from the engine to create a venturi effect and draw fuel from the sub tank into the main tank. So the main tank is kept full until the sub tank is empty.

You are 100% correct in that. So still a bit of an oddity what happened. Only other time I have had to prime the main filter is when I installed the pre-filter.

Doing a rally for the Car Club this coming weekend so will see how I go from a full tank. Going to be some mileage put on as it is about an hour and half each way, plus the course x2 days!
