I've noticed that too, they sure pump out the charcoal!. Speaking to a few people I know who own them, reckon there not flash on juice either the auto ones especially. The old D4D's not too bad after all!

      • I also saw a near new V8 Tojo ute blowing a load of black smoke as he went through the gears on the way to work today. Certainly didn't look normal.

Really??? ... Explaine in detail how you came to that conclusion as i always thought (Based on my educated knowledge) that Black Smoke equals an engine running inefficiently!

                Cheers

                • Black smoke is symptomatic of overfuelling. In the bad old days engines were typically tuned to the smoke limit (around 16/1 air fuel ratio) which is the appearance of black smoke in the exhaust. With turbocharged engines it is not unusual to overfuel in order to have the fuel available for when the turbo catches up because once the turbo has supplied enough air you do get a greater power output. Running continuously at the smoke limit simply means the engine is running too rich which is inefficient as SWR has said and you tend to 'dirty' up the engine and exhaust with unburnt fuel. Pretty much all turbo engines will blow black smoke when the loud pedal is pushed hard but it is only for a short period, though some of the chipped engines I have seen including some new D4D motors run way too much fuel and are smoky a lot of the time.

                        • I also saw an old bongo type van "wicked" getting around with a couple of skanky back-packers on-board. It too was blowing heaps of black smoke. I don't know if that was the engine or whether they were choofing on a big reefa. The van certainly wasn't chipped.

                          • Some Useless but perhaps interesting facts:
As most of these common Rail injectors age, the amount of fuel that they flow INCREASES. Actually, this is quite normal as the nozzle holes are the main restriction in the whole system (and therefore governs flow) but over time + due to the massive rail pressure, these holes open up and therefore start dumping fuel.
1VD injectors can get up to +30% flow as they age, most specifically in the 900-1350 bar range (all throttle positions below 2700 odd rpm). Hence when people call up with 'only 2 failed' we really try to get them the whole set as the power balance cylinder to cylinder would be shot if we didn't. Navara's are more or less in the same boat.

1KD's are actually quite unique to this end however. 1kds seem to have more internal wear which creates higher levels of leak back. This lost internal fuel actually does a great job of balancing out the net increases in fuel! This internal loss is why we get people to check idle volume when the car is warm, as this is when the pressure is the lowest, and gives us the clearest picture of internal loss. but as the pressure increases they tend to balance one another out (in terms of output flow anyway). Obvious issue is that as they age, more internal loss means less pressure gets to the nozzle, and of course, the bigger these holes are, the worse it atomizes... but anyway, symptoms are not as severe as other makes as everyone has stated.

                            Essay over!

                            • That makes me more determined to ditch mine at 120K, with 2 injectors @ 112K and 2 @ 40K. They are all still within spec but I have all the bits ready for the rebuild.
