Diesel rattle

Today I had my complimentary 1000km check up and I quizzed the service manager about the issue of noisy engine and injectors .His response at 1st was What issue? so I pushed further with my questions and mentioned this web site and then received this response Quote-
Toyota are aware of the issue and is curently looking at changing the fuel filtering set up. Unqoute. He also told me of one poor fellow that had a bad batch of fuel go through his new Hilux D4 and $10,000 dollars later it was repaired,COVERED BY a well known oil company. I will be keeping ALL my fuel receipts until this problem is finally solved.

D4 - that's pathetic - on the service manager's behalf. It really erks me that some people need a bit of pushing before they open up. In my books - that's a cover for a dishonest mob. Funny tho, that he is pointing the finger to "bad fuel" - makes me wonder if that is true or whether it is in fact "bad injectors" or both (ie: injectors not suited for Aust fuel). eitherway....grr...

Reassuring reply from a Toyota service manager to a colleague:

We have been advised by Toyota that they are aware of the engine knock on cold start in the current model diesel Prados. The knock is not an engine knock but is caused by the injector pulses on cold start enrichment program.

There is a field fix which is currently being devised to correct the knock but we have not been advised of a timeframe as to when this will be available. As I understand, it should be a very quick fix and information I have been given verbally from Toyota suggests that it will be a software flash for the Engine Control Unit, which should take no more than 1 hour to complete. There is speculation that the four diesel injectors may also require replacement in addition to the software flash, at which point we will require the vehicle for a full day.

If the noise is of great concern to you I can book the vehicle in for inspection at a time when our next loan vehicle is available, which is Monday 28th July (set to change dependant on time in responding) to carry out a cold start procedure to confirm that the knock is what has been mentioned above.

I have currently recorded the vehicles that are experiencing the problem (2 so far plus your vehicle) and will be in contact with the owners once the fix becomes available. Toyota have assured me that no further damage to the engine or external components will occur as a result of continued driving.

Engine Noise

Having read 195 comments on this issue,(the largest number on the diesel engine site),I am surprised that no independent experts opinion appears to have been sought by anyone to protect themselves and no consumer affairs claims have been made for the obvious financial cost and time wasted on returning vehicles for repair/observation..it looks like an endemic problem with this engine in Australia

Hardly... and to the best of my knowledge not one engine has actually failed due to the injector problem.

Why would you when Toyota acknowledge the problem? owners are just waiting for a fix.

What manufacturer (of any consumer product) has a warranty that covers consequential loss?

So is that going to be Toyotas long awaited fix? Stick a brouchure in with the warranty book and say only use clean fuel. :roll:

So are we supposed to carry around glass beakers now and decant fuel into it first to check for water and contaminants? What a joke :x
