  • Hey everyone, I have a 2008 GXL with 190000km which I have recently purchased. In part due to reading this thread I had the injectors, seals and fuel lines replaced at 185000km with Baileys Diesel replacements. Truck has been running great with the following exception:
    - Black smoke visible under heavy acceleration.
    - Small amounts of grey and black smoke whilst accelerating in reverse
Any ideas what this could be? I am about to put a 6mm EGR reduction on and clean it at the same time. The truck does have a 3" exhaust and I believe it had a chip in its previous life. The black smoke in acceleration only became noticeable after I had the injectors done. Should I take it back to the mechanics that replaced the injectors?

    • So all this talk of Injectors failing and destroying engines, has this been solved in the 150 series or is there still an issues with the injectors.
My 150 has just ticked over 120,000km and now after reading this im worried!

      • Still happens. Go to this section in the 150 area and have a read.

What was the compression readings at injector install?
Where the injectors installed by an expert?

          Blocked air filter?
          Dirty maf sensor?

Maybe you should take it back, if they are experts?
          It should not happen!

It's not really a matter of problems or solving anything.
These suckers are wear n tear items, (ALL CRD ENGINES) high pressure & erosion wear.
Bad fuel & contamination will speed up the process.

Check injectors every 10,000k service, by an expert.
Replace injectors every 120,000k if they make it till then, by an expert.
The new injectors have improved, not sure how much longer they will last just yet, but you have to be happy with 120k.
If you follow my procedure your injectors are pretty close to free.
I might start a new thread on actual maintenance requirements.

            Cheers,

            ####.

                Thanks,

The work was done by a business recommended by Baileys, so I would hope they are experts. Purely my fault I neglected to get the readings when I picked it up, lesson learnt for the next job in (hopefully) 120k.

I am running a unifilter, which is cleaned and oiled as per specs.

In neutral if I rev about 2700rpm I get black smoke, but interestingly it only happens 3-4 times then dissipates even when I rev above 2700rpm again.

I will get in contact with the business tomorrow to get their take on it, it's running great in every other situation which is frustrating especially after spending big money to get the work done, not to mention getting the truck in the first place.

You could try a standard air filter to see......clean maf too.

                  • Is the smoke only seen at night. If so that's pretty normal as far as I know. The lights from behind amplify the smoke effect.

The smoke was seen during the day, it was quite dark so very noticeable. I believe the route cause was a dirty MAP sensor filter, I gave it a clean and a lot of black mess came out of it, along with a clean of the MAF and adding a standard air filter. On heavy acceleration (flooring it from stationary or low speeds up hill) only the faintest amount of smoke can be seen and its no where near the amount that was previously seen.

So thanks for the assistance! This really is a great forum.

                      • I did the Intake manifold carbon clean on my 150 on the weekend and added the EGR Restrictor plate, and I noticed this morning that my engine/Injectors were noticeable quieter and a lot less rattle noise when cold!!

                        • I'm fairly new to this forum and am looking to buy a 120 diesel. The one I'm looking at blows smoke on start up for 1-2 minutes then clears up.

Sorry if these questions have already been asked and answered but this forum is a labyrinth!

                          1. Should I be buying if it blows light coloured smoke for 1-2 minutes after cold start up?
                          2. What is a ball park figure on having the injectors and associated items replaced by a shop (not by me)?

                          Thanks heaps in advance.
                          120 D4D with nothing on it......yet.

                            1. Not unless you get an exert to check it & maybe no anyway.
                            2. 3grand + or - depending where you go & what sort of a job you want.
