  • Interesting!! :? :?

I have checked back through my service invoices and each invoice I have been charged for Diesel fuel additive that has been installed by the dealer and I have never questioned it, so I might just raise the question now

    • Interesting Jacto. How does the additive appear on your invoice? Just checked through mine and there's a lot of jargon there. Just wondering what I'm seeing. I might have to query some more stuff on it this time.

I really only had it while I lightly accelerated up the few streets from my driveway. Didn't want to go any faster as something was clearly up. Stopped at the first intersection no more than 2 -3 minutes away, and when I took off it was gone. I was only stopped briefly. Very strange. This morning.... not a sausage, ran well....... and it was also about 7 degrees according to the Prado air temp guage. So I don't know what to make of it. I'd say I'm in the "problem developing" phase and time will tell if it gets worse. Could be something else entirely at this point but I got that sinking feeling.........

Kind of like a "re-occuring" work injury for work cover etc.

That all said, i just purchased a $9.99 bottle of "Diesel Power" fuel conditioner - seems our fuel quality is sooooo bad that the lack of sulphur in fuel is known to stuff up injectors - its just a matter of time. this bottle supposedly treats 1000 litres (enough for ~10,000kms) - not bad for a 250ml bottle! Not only that - it kills any fungal growth and also improves efficiency. If it does nothing more than what it states it does and i get the rattle - then not much gained - then again if it puts it off - entirely - then it has turned out to be a cheap mod and something Toyotal should look into - not to mention other car manufacturers.
I have used Chemtech Diesel Power for 20 years and have never had any fuel system problems, I normally dose slightly over the stated dosage. I have also used Diesel Power for many years in my Boat 200Ltr Petrol fuel tank and never had a problem with off ULP which is a major issue for us boaties.

I am pretty sure is states "diesel fuel conditioner" I think about $10 but I will check the invoice when I get back home at the weekend and let you know. I am wondering if my dealer got a "heads up" and was advised to put it in and that is the track I might take when I start asking questions. Anyway touch wood, I have not had any indication of the problem in my D4D

          • Will adding a "diesel fuel conditioner" product void the Toyota Warranty??

            • Are the D4D Hiluxes or Hiaces affected by this knocking problem?

I wonder if the "reflash" engine programming will lower the power output of the engine for the Prado....

Yep, as posted previously in this thread, my work D4D Hilux has rattled since new, now done 110 000kms.
Fairly rattled this week with low temps in mornings. We have a fleet of them and the couple I have driven seem to do it. We have been less concerned than private owners have been, probably because ours are thru "Rent a Thrash"

                  • Thanks Daz for the links, I found this post on the second link very interesting:

"I have changed loads of injectors and have yet to have one come back with the same or worse noises yet. Just make sure when they are changed the dealer does re-code them as it is most important. This involves calibrating them using the handheld computer (IT2) and entering the 30 digit calibration code stamped on the top of the new injectors into the ECU. After all four have been calibrated the batteries need to be disconnected for a few mins so the ECU "learns" the new values. Basically this ensures the new injectors are delivering the optimum amount of fuel (fuel trimming) so they dont over/under fuel which causes the knocking in the first place"

This guy obviously works for Toyota in the UK and seems to know what he is on about.

You are correct, the procedure is in the manual so the Toyota Mechanics should have no problems doing the simple (for a common Rail Injector that is) change over.
How's your machine behaving after the change overs :?:

Still waiting for the new injectors to turn up at the dealership so I can go down and get it done. The dodgy second hand one they put in to take the place of my non functioning injector is definitely getting worse and I can readily hear it now even when the engine is warm. It was very noticeable on the weekend when we went out bush.

Again, the cynic in me says... WHY ONLY TWO INJECTORS? and WERE TWO OF THE INJECTORS FAULTY? WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE? DID THE EXISTANCE OF THE RATTLE CAUSE ANY DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE? WILL IT RE-OCCUR? WILL i BE COVERED FOR ANY WARRANTY ISSUES IN RELATION TO INJECTION/RATTLE/ENGINE FAILURE PAST THE 100k PERIOD?
THese and other questions I will present to Dealer when i collect the car. I really dont expect an answer of course, but i WILL be posing them to TOYOTA themselves.

That is BS masso, the tech at the Toyota dealership that is doing mine said that when the injectors fail, no matter how many are out of tolerance, they all get changed out.

I think they are trying to economise due to the lack of new injectors available.

I have been waiting over 5 weeks now for the dealership to get the new injectors.

                            • If the problem is a (or couple of) defective injector(s) then changing one or two out is fine. The problem though seems to be caused by operation, regardless of whether it is wear or damage from fuel etc. So the replacement should be all components that are susceptible to the damage. Obviously ALL the injectors. Pump too? Mav did they say anything about the pump? Prior to common rail systems "modern" diesels tended to use the pump just as a pressure supply and the injector does all the clever stuff but I am out of touch and not sure about the D4D CRD arrangement.

Anyway Masso I would be pushing very very hard to get all injectors replaced as well as extended warranty unless Toyota assures you that all the injectors are replaced with a new improved version that is designed to last the life of the engine.

I have 14k on my D4D now and no change to how it sounds or runs but we have had few mornings this year below 5C so far. Having said that Masso has the problem...

No nothing was said about the pump but that does not mean that the pump is not also damaged.

After reading the reports around the world about the damage that can be caused by these faulty injectors to the engine I am wondering if Toyota are deliberately not saying anything other than the obvious to the owners in the hope that the engines will last until the warranty has expired then they will get away without costly engine repairs or replacements.

The thing is Masso they should tell you how close to the tolerance those other two injectors are. They may be only in tolerance by 0.01% and as such are likely to fail very soon and then you are right back where you started with the noise and the possible damage.
