I'm at around 15000kms, and have noticed it in the last 3000-4000kms. I wouldn't say that it sounds like the motor is going to jump through the bonnet but the noise has increased. If it's normal I can live with it but I thought I would get it checked out and now it's documented with toyota for any further issues.
Cold start is the worst, give it a few pumps of the throttle and you can definately hear knocking... Joey heard it the other day.. But of course he thought it sounded meaty... I think he actually enjoyed the noise!

Story thus far is... Definite knock that needs someone qaulified to work out what to do next. So gotta take it back to Yota next week to get someone qaulified to look at it...again

This is the stage mine is at, so it is currently at Healesville Toyota. It will get plugged in, in the morning and they will send the results off. They have not heard of the re-flash, so hopefully when they send the results in Toyota will tell them then.
My oil is black after 1000 k's and I can smell diesel fumes quite strongly after a cold start, so it's quite evident that it's running rich. Plus economy has fallen away. The rattle when warm is at it's worse between 2000 and 2500 revs.
The Service Department said they have done a re-flash on the 200 series, but not the 3 litre yet.
I was expecting this. Just as my rattle started to come on at around 10,000K, I knew that either sensors are starting to play up controlling the injectors or the injectors had accelaerated wear giving the same result, I knew my fuel additive treatment to mask the root cause would eventually loose its ability to do so.
My rattle got progressively worse, even with the fuel additive and exhibited the most rattle when hot! Off to Toyota, plug her in, drive around under particular load conditions to record the engine's operating parameters and presto, injector 4 was diagnosed the noisy one. Waiting for Toyota to come back with a booking date when the replacement injector arrives (hopefully mid next week).
It was relatively easy for the diagnosis as the my rattle was most prominent at operating temperature so I didn't have to wait for a cold morning! Interestingly there was NO rattle on first start up and for the first few minutes of driving, but came to life as the engine temperature rose. Opposite of what other forum members have experienced.

Injector 4 again. Is this just co-incidence or what. Everyone so far that I have heard of being diagnosed have been injector 4.

hi all i brought up the death rattle issue with a dealer recently and he strait away blamed one brand of diesal for the problem in 90% of cases. probably passing the buck.
dont think i can name the brand here or not?

Blaming of the fuel does not really fit this problem imo, if it were fuel related then why is it always only one injector and not all the injectors? Mine was injector 4 and when I asked this specific question on the status of the other injectors they were all spot on. If it were bad fuel I would expect all the injectors to be affected not just one.

im heading off to the dealer in a week or so for my 10k service. so far so good and no death rattle - however i will mention that she's a little noisy on start-up but that quickly settles.
Out of interest, came back from a camping trip in the Flinders last week. The car went really well.

Having done 3982Km with my playdo I too have noticed a very loud piston slap on startup when cold/warm, also when driving with light throttle in most of the gears I can hear a bit of slap. I decided to change my oil as I cannot believe the oil is not change after the first 1000km service, isn't the engine running on thin mineral oil to bed the components in?
Anyway I changed my oil to Castrol Magnatec 15W 40, I believe it is semi synthetic. Noted straight away that the slap on startup is gone and so has the slap when driving with light throttle. It has certainly quieten the engine.
Just a note with the dropped oil, it was very black especially for 3982km! I think I'll keep changing my oil every 5000km from now on.
So far so good after my injector replacement. Noise is there but almost imperceptable. Only notice it because i am looking for it.. but still goes away after a block or two. Sounds logical that cause was over fuelling due to injector, so will keep an eye on it. Actually was thinking that as 50K approaches, I may get it to one of those ' Diesel Expert Tuning' type joints... to give it the once over.... see if they have any experience / fixes/ comments... (?)

Good to hear that yours was fixed like mine. I guess that yours failed the opposite to mine. Mine completely stopped letting any fuel through yours on the other hand sounds as though it was letting too much fuel through?
Actually your scenario is the worse of the two as dripping fuel can cause burn through of the pot so the Toyota tech told me. When I asked if mine would have damaged the engine he said that it would not have due to no fuel coming out of the injector.

I got my 20k service coming up shortly. I also have an '08 D4D auto, but I am sticking with one fuel manufacturer. So thankfully no fateful engine knock at the moment. Lets hope Toyo put a fix together for all future D4D owners.
