Does this rattle come on gradually or does it suddenly appear? From Mav's last post, it sounds like it came on quite suddenly. Just wondering what to look out for. We have an August 08 production D4D and have now done about 8000kms and the car has been superb.
From my experience both times it just suddenly happened and then progressively got/gets worse over time.

I agree with Mav, it just started suddenly.....no warning......nothing to cause it ( fuel / service / temp )
Just not there one day and start it up the next and you have the dreaded rattle
That is very helpful to know. Nothing worse than wondering if there is a hint of it with any slight change in the normal "rattle" that diesels have. I have read some posts from guys thinking it might be starting. Sounds like when it starts it is pretty alarming from the outset.

Yes Nick when it starts you will know exactly that you have it, no need to guess if it is there or not. Mine has reached Panza status again, thank the lord it is going in on Tuesday in Adelaide to have it repaired again and hopefully they will repair the Turbo at the same time. If this occurs again after this repair then that will be it for me with the D4D I will not get another one. I have been very disappointed with the reliability of this car considering it is a Toyota and I always had a lot of respect for imported Toyotas, this has blown that faith to kingdom come.

Mav - what's the issue with your turbo???
Easter-08 White GXL D4D Auto - delivered in near record time (5d) from placement of order. Has turned into a "Bermuda" or "Swiss fund" where $ get lost or converted into mods/accessories.
It is leaking oil internally, I had the main rear engine seal replaced and the transfer pinion seal replaced at the 50,000 service but the turbo was going to take too long to fix for the time I had remaining in Newcastle at Xmas. So hopefully the Adelaide dealership wil fix it this week coming, apparantly the turbos are taken off and sent away for repair then shipped back and re-installed.
To be honest I will be hapy if I just get the injectors done cause the noise is driving me nuts. :x

Just had my D4D in for its 40k service. The workshop foreman told me that they thought it was running rough when they drove it into the workshop so ran an injector test. The computer said that two of the injectors were apprpoaching the limits of the "feedback" tolerance, showing 4.6. The limit is apparently 4.9. The others were under 3. They said they would try to get the two injectors replaced under warranty and that the others would go the same way in due course and would have to be replaced.
Bugger.

4xx4,
atleast your getting some good feedback from your service center, seems like most of them tell you whatever to shut you up and get you out the door.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised that they offered the info and warranty service rather than me having to go and argue a case. He was also prepared to discuss technicalities at a level i could understand, in contrast to the fob-off that many people have experienced.
For info of those in southwestern Sydney, the dealer is Clintons Toyota, Narellan
Cheers

Interesting reading.
While Im not a member of the rattle club, could I have someone clarify a few things?
Does the 08 model prado already have the latest injectors as standard? Are there any reports of 08 plated prados suffering the rattle?
Is BP diesel the best fuel to be running in the D4D ?

Well mine is back at the dealership having a second round of injectors replaced. I am hoping this time that I get the new model injector otherwise I will have the rattle again in a few months time. Seriously though I think this is it for the D4D for me, I will not be getting another D4D Prado.

had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.
Well I got the Prado back late this afternoon, they only swapped out one injector again and again it was the number 4 injector which is the one that they replaced last time. However the head technician did say that he has filed a report on the engine cause he thinks that it has a problem in the bottom end and he wants to get Toyota's advice on what to do. Personally I think he wants to replace some major items but he is not putting himself in the firing line until he gets the okay from Toyota. Gives me all kinds of fuzzy warm feelings - NOT!!!
I know now that I will definitely not be getting another D4D powered Prado.

That really sux mav, I bet it makes you just want to sell the car now... I know that's how I feel sometimes! I have been too busy to chase mine up but next service will be coming up in another 1000kms so I'll get it looked at again along with my throw out bearing that whines like a bitch and my rear parking sensors that keep falling out! I find it really quite bizarre that Toyota is not replacing all troubled D4D's with the new type injectors and ECU reflash as was told was available to me by Toyota corporate when I rang a few months back. I wished I had of recorded the conversation as my dealer flatly denies it's available but other guys on PP have had it done.
I compared my fuel consumption with Gimps on our easter trip and my average was 13L/100kms and his was 11L/100kms. I get roughly 770kms before the fuel gauge flicks over to 90L
Good luck with it mate, might be time to give it the flick?
By the way, I'm heading to Alice on the 15th May for a few days, I'll keep an eye out for you!
Crammy
Oh and I went for a spin in a 3 day old D4D hilux today and it rattled it's head off! I couldn't believe how bad it was, it certainly made mine sound quiet. Weird
