Your reasoning behind this is actually slightly flawed. The compression ratio does not directly depict the combustion pressures when you are talking about a turbocharged vehicle. The 1KZ-TE doesn't run as much boost as 1KD-TE engine. Part of the reason for the lower compression ratio is the 1KD-TE has better off boost driveability and comes onto boost earlier. Toyota actually have a reputation for severaly over engineering their engines - shame they couldn't do this with their gear boxes :x . The engine fault of a metled piston is more logically due to a failed inejector or lack of fuel delivery (leaning), not cheaper engine components.

Having sold my old 3l CRD 1999 Jackaroo 12 months ago due to problems with its injectors I am now the proud owner of a 2007 GXL Prado D4D which I have had for about a month. You can imagine my dismay at wanting to investigate a recent cold starting rattle to discover on this forum 44 pages relating to this very problem with varying tales of woe and success. BUGGER! ......Bugger, Bugger, Bugger! I cannot believe this... is it the Jackaroo all over again....? I have spent several hours today reading all this and am dismayed by Mav's experience... was your third time try at rectifying this problem successful? On the on the hand, sounds like Babs and a few others including our French compatriots have had better luck. Also it sounds like depending on the dealer will determine how much run around Toyota gives me. Can any of you other Perth guys PM me with the names of the better Toyota service departments to deal with. Would greatly appreciate it. I had already booked the car in with Nedlands Toyota yesterday to check it out and was a bit surprised that the woman immediately wanted to know my manufacture date and VIN. Hopefully, this is a good sign that the problem is acknowledged?
Regarding these new injectors is the supply situation improving or getting worse does anybody know? My build date is 02/07 delivered 04/07 so I still have 4.5 months left on the Toyota warranty. Did I understand correctly from this thread that it is still possible to purchase the Toyota extended warranty plan at this late a date and not being the original vehicle owner? Can anyone tell me how much it cost? I did buy an extended warranty from Westside Auto auctions but I suspect this would be useless for a problem like this???

          BBB,

I think you can still buy the Toyota Extended Warranty Insurance plan from any Toyota dealer as long as it's still under warranty, and you haven't exceeded 100,000 kms yet. I believe you can get cover for an additional 3 years, but it's capped at 150,000 kms.

But be very careful because I think that insurance policy is no good if you've missed any scheduled services. So if your service history book look good, it'll probably be worth your while to drop in at your dealer and asking the finance sales person - they handle the extended warranty sales.

Cost of an extended warranty for 3 extra years, capped at 150,000 kms is $1800, from memory but don't quote me!

Long time since I posted anything but having been reading all the problems being experienced with injectors thought I would add this for info. Have had number 4 replaced earlier this year and so far so good but I intend to keep my car (2007 D4D T/D) for another few years so enquired re extended warranty -
            Here is some info:
Your vehicle must be under 30 months old from date of first registration.
            You can take out 1. cover to 150,000k - $1340 for 1 year; $1540 for 2 years or $1840 for 3 years.
            2. cover to 100,000k - $1140 for 1 year; $1340 for 2 years or $1640 for 3 years.
The total kilometer figure shown above is NOT in addition to your present speedo reading but is TOTAL travelled.
Toyota call it "Toyota Extra Care".
To me it is a lot of money to pay out but if you have problems like those being mentioned on this post it may be well worth it.

With factory warranties, servicing can be done by any qualified mechanic, and warranty is not adversely affected as long as logbook servicing tasks are undertaken as specified. Yesterday, my mechanic told me that this is correct until extended warranty comes in to effect. He told me that extended warranties from Toyota dictate that servicing must be carried out at authorised Toyota service centre. The extended warranty seems to be another ploy to get customers to pay exorbitant servicing costs for longer IMO.
If anyone is experiencing problems with their vehicle, report it in writing to an authorised service centre. They will want to inspect the vehicle. If they do not fix the problem and it leads to more damage after warranty period has expired, Toyota are still legally obliged to fix the problem, as they did not do so when vehicle was under warranty.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I found the d4d does this at higher altitude, as the engines are tuned at sea level.....you can get your local dealer to tune for your altitude.
Unfortunately diesels don't compensate for higher altitude like a petrol does. So they pump out more black soot from an engine that can't cope with less air intake...a snorgle might help, but not that much.
The D4D is not a 427 Chevy big block, so don't expect instant light speed at start up...give it a chance to warm up first....

The rattle turned up the morning I picked the car up from its 40k service. As i drove it out the lot , I thought the techs forgot to bolt something back on , did a U turn by the time I got back to the service center the noise had gone. The usual " can't find a problem" was the reply. It goes in for it 60k service next week so again will bring it up.

Good news. I mentioned back in December how I started getting this well documented D4D rattle on my 2007 Prado. After running pretty much through all the Toyota hoops that have been mentioned in this thread finally just before NY I got a call from Nedlands Toyota saying a set of 4 new injectors had arrived. Had them installed the week after and 'touch wood' all now running well again.

Just had the injectors replaced in the Prado at 32,000kms - it has gone from sounding like an agricultural implement to what I would consider a normal sounding diesel. No noticeably increase / decrease in power or consumption at this stage but a heck of a lot quieter when taking off and the engine is cold.

Jeez Mark - How did you manage it? I note that you have the DPK like I do - yet in Adelaide they wont touch mine mainly because they say it is within spec and I dont qualify for it under warranty because of engine mods - I think they are referring to the diesel/gas though. Which IMHO is nonsense. The cold morning noise is still a problem and it takes more cranking over than usual now to get it going. Done 36,000kms and warranty is running out in 6 months - maybe it will get fixed before then. Looks like some more complaining is in order.

Hi Dock - Since the 20,000km service I have been asking them to note down that it is very noisy at start up - at the 30,000km service I managed to get a senior service guy who said after the service - we have ordered 4 new injectors etc - lets book you in - funny story was they supposedly ordered in the 4 injectors, I dropped the Prado off and in the afternoon they called me and said they ordered the wrong ones - only detecting this when they took out either all 4 or 1injector(s) (they didn't tell me) anyway I had to rebook - last week I went in and had to leave the Prado overnight (they detected a leak from the area of one of the new injectors) and when I went in to collect the Prado I got talking to the guy - he said - Toyota recognise there is an issue with some prados (not enough to warrant a recall) and are replacing them (a modified injector) on a case by case basis. I would keep on quering them - speak to a senior service guy but as you said with your mods they are baulking. I told them I had the DEPK chip installed - but this did'nt seem to make any difference with them (possibly as I have the on / off switch installed) Cheers Mark
