ours is 03/07, we have to be careful as one fix that toyota has tested was a timing change that makes the problem go away but derates the output, my dealer did say that each injector has a built in calibration value that sometimes gets corrupted, we dont see how 1 or even 2 could cause this noise. I may have said it here before but two dealers have told me that toyota now run a injector function test on these motors, if it shows +or- 4% they swap them out. The place in melbourne that clean them is flat out. As these injectors are also in the v8 has any one seen the rattle in that motor ( yet) ?

well the Prado is booked in for warranty work on Wednesday down in Adelaide, they have asked to have the car overnight so they can here the rattle from start up in the morning. So I guess this will be the test. They did say that they had had a Toyota rep there in the past when others have complained about this but the rep has said that it is normal for the D4D.

Well I believe it is anything but normal for a car to sound the way mine does! So I will have to wait and see what they reckon.

I have worked on new D11R Bulldozers in the past that sound like there are 6 monkeys with jackhammers inside the engine, when started up cold. Caterpillar (along with alot of other major engine manufacturers) utilize a method where they effectively shutdown fuel injectors in a specific firing pattern, to encourage the engine to work harder at idle when cold and warm up faster.

I know that's no help to your noise, but I have also found that incorrectly timed, electronic fuel injectors in big diesels will cause a pre-detonation noise as well. I am unsure if the toyota diesel injectors in the D4D are programmable or timeable, but it was just a train of thought..

        Cheers,
Yeah Matt it is definitely an injector timing issue, I am just perplexed at why it did not rear itself until the car had done roughly 10,000 km. Prior to that it was as quiet as a church mouse right from stone motherless cold, now it is "Hello, I'm Mr Panza!"

          Hi Matt,
The little Cat 3196 6 cyl Marine engines used to sound the same on a cold June morning in Cairns admittedly our June Mornings are min about 14C and nothing as cold as Alice Springs on a winter morning, it will be interesting to hear what the Toyota guys find on Mavs vehicle.
          Keep us posted Mav.

Very interested to see what happens Mav.. per my previous post..mine rattles its head off every morning till warmed.. its gotta be hurting something... only started to do it this winter , after about 20K. Have been waiting to see if anyone has a definative answer from Toyota, but I think I will head to the dealer today and book it in for an overnight kip in their workshop , then a morning demo.

Presume yours is same as mine.. if you idle to warmup..its ok (but who has time for THAT?). When you drive off under a light load it clangs away, then the revs rise and it clears up.. till they drop again on the gear change.. and it clangs again. Same thing?

I'll be interested to hear the diagnosis with this one Mav. Mine has some clatter to it, but I'm worried it will get worse once I hit the magical 10k. From what I have read here, it's not uncommon once you get to this mileage for it to worsen... :?

I too have a rattle that certainly doesn't sound like my previous Prado but I have had the opportunity to drive a few Jackaroo diesel's over the years, and if the Prado is noisy, these things were deafening, to the point where bystanders would look up when I drove past. However they kept on going (in my case at least). The question I have is; Has the performance of the vehicle or fuel economy suffered for anyone since this noise appeared? I just put it down to the direct injection thing and a cold engine so I haven't worried about it.

Not that I have noticed Neil, however the noise has certainly become louder. I am not kidding when I say it sounds like a Sherman tank.

Does the D4D run a seperate intake temp sensor or is it a boost/intake temp combo sensor?? Just thinking about a problem I encountered at winter with certain Cummins engines ie cold intake temps and timing changes.

Yes I would say that mine sounds like that at times, although perhaps it is far more evident in colder climates. You would think that with the thousands of Hilux and Prado D4D's on the road that it would have attracted a lot of attention outside of this forum, as it does seem to be quite common, however I haven't really heard of any.

When I put it in for its 30K service last Wednesday I was telling the service guy about the problem and the guy waiting to be served next to me pipes up and says "Mine doesn't do that, it is as quite as a mouse." I asked him how many k's he had on it and he said that this would be its 10K service. I told him to expect the rattle anytime from now on.

                              Hi Guys,
Mine sounds normal for a HCCI Engine to me, but I have only 7800kms up, drove a late model D4D Auto Hilux recently and it sounded the same as mine and it had 18,000kms up. Have listened to a couple in the local shopping centre carpark and they also sounded similar.
What did the Toyota Service Bloke have to say Mav :?:
