The repair bill is currently around the $10,000 mark.

    • I just retrieved my camper trailer from Meekatharra today to find some low life has stolen the spare - 7 inch sunraysia with brand new BFG A/T: bastard.

      • So guess what the progress is with my engine so far this week: absolutely nothing. It got pulled on Saturday, I had a look at it on Tuesday, they costed some parts Wednesday and, as of 2.30pm today (Friday) they have done bugger all. So much for a quiet week in the workshop. I wonder if I'll get it back in time for the GTG?

        • Just had call from Toyota. They need to do a proper assessment of what is wrong with the engine (no, really), then when they find out what is trashed and what is salvagable they can advise the insurance company and then get the go ahead to repair. So WTF were they quoting me parts prices on Wednesday for? Apparently, 2 pistons are all carboned up and 2 are cracked. So they need to see what can be used again. Honestly, I could have done all that in half a day last week.

          • I would happily pay for new timing belt now as it will save labour costs in 20K time when it will be due for replacement. You know, I don't understand how these dealerships run the business the way do. The majority of staff are morons. None really appear to know the product they are supposed to be representing, or maybe I'm too old fashioned where I remember the days when tradesmen really were tradesman - proud of their work capacity and quality. And that old chestnut "Customer Service" which was always insisted upon by management, always delivered by staff and totally expected by the customers. Now the staff look straight through you like you're not even there or they give you that "who the F%^# are you, disturbing me while I drink my 19th decaf latte of the day?"

            • Update: My car now sits in the naughty corner at the local workshop. They have sent the list of parts to be replaced to the insurer (Swann) including complete short motor, gaskets (including head gasket dependent on bore diameter?), water pump and injectors. So all I can do now is wait.

              • Guys,
It may not be the same rattle, but my old girl (08 D4D) rattled on cold mornings. I chucked a can of Winns injector cleaner into a tank. It sounded a little worse. Next tank she purred like a kitten.
The noise came back 3 months later. This time a run to Lidsdale Forrest and back on Sunday has settled it down again. The rattle is not there this morning.
Perhaps its the short runs we all have to do to work that are causing some of the rattles?

My rattle is probably not as loud as some describe, but it may be worth a try for some.

Mine is going to require a bit more than a can of Wynns to fix. You'll know the D4D Death Rattle when you hear it, feel it, see it and smell it. Mine only ever clattered lightly when cold but smoothed out and ran quiet as when warmed up.

                  • One of our new model D4D Hiluxes at work got carted off on a flatbed truck today. I'm keen to find out what happened to it, necessitating a tow like that. My initial suspicions would be that an import worker filled it up with unleaded. Dead set, we hire idiots. One of the V8 troopies has had 3 sets of keys, 3 computer reprogrames @ $1200 a time because these knobs keep loosing the keys.

That's what worries me...a bit. Did you ever find out if the sump screen was blocked?

                      • Update: Parts lists and costs have been sent to insurer. Insurer wants to know why they can't sleeve the block and repair the original. Dealer says new short motor is cheaper option and saves on labour costs too. He is confident they will approve the new motor complete with injectors, new water pump, gaskets, etc. They will also tear down the pump and inspect that. I am going bush for 3 weeks so hopefully the car will be good to go when I return. I only got a look at the injectors and they were clean with no sign of blow by. The injector seat holes were also quite clean so looks like only injector failure and not seat failure was the cause.

                        • A colleague in Esperance had her 2007 D4D Prado serviced and reported that it was running with a constant rattle. They told her it was probably an injector out of spec but to leave it and see how it went for another 1000km. Esperance Toyota denied any issues with the injectors in D4D engines. Well, you guessed it, the rattle continued and when she drove to Albany the check engine light came on. The dealer there admitted that there was in fact a problem with the injectors in the D4D. She needed to replace all 4 injectors and fuel pipes. This was going to cost around $10,000 but they did her a deal where it only cost a shade under $6,000. She was out of warranty. But today she told me there is still a noticable constant rattle depsite the new injectors. I think the problem might have gone deeper into the engine or the new injectors may not have been matched properly to the ECM.

Yep, I was correct first up. Idiot filled the "lux with unleaded. Luckily the fuel card was declined because you can only buy diesel and not unleaded. The vehicle was first flatbedded to work and then to Toyota. That's the 6th time this year. You gotta ask yourself can this idiots read or what. BIG "DIESEL" sticker on the outside of the fuel flap.

                            • Thanks 'Roo. They get a 3 week break from me annoying them because I'm away with work until 3 September. Cutting it fine for the GTG. Might have to run it in across the Nullabor.
