It has surpassed the $2 mark in most places in the outback. I was at marla last week and it was $2.18/lt. Here in Alice it has been at $1.99 for the last 2 weeks and I expect it will rocket past this in the next week or two.

I will have to increase my lease payment to cover the added fuel expense but your are correct that our D4D's will soon have no resale value at current diesel fuel increases. Those prices were for Shell diesel.

Blokes that rekon that a petrol is better over a diesel or vice versa are kidding themselves. It's all about you and what YOU want.

Opinions are like a holes, everyone's got one!

      Well thats my $2 haha

      Well said Crammy
I have swapped recently from a diesel to petrol to put on gas and I have kept one thing the same and that is I drive a Prado.
Benefits of Petrol over Diesel, do we really need to get into tit for tat. Ive had both and dont really see that much difference between the two.

Yeah I kinda figured the outback must be hitting the $2.00 / L mark already. It's funny you know. My parents live at Jurien Bay, some 3 hrs by road north of Perth and they too are verging on the $2.00 mark. Should Jurien Bay pay as much as the Alice?? Not if freight is the deciding factor. Interesting.

Anyway Mav I was interested in people's reactions out in the Alice to fuel hitting the $2.00 barrier. Just thinking back to the $1.00 furore, I wondered what people were saying about the price now. I suppose Alice-ites are so used to high prices anyway.

What can you do really except fork out the dollars. I have noticed that there are just as many cars on the road here as the was when it was $1/ltr so I guess people are just putting up with it. We have yet to go past the $2/ltr mark in town so the mental barrier has not been breached as yet.

It will be interesting to see what happens when it is breached. We can for the most part bypass the outback roadhouses with their excessively high fuel prices. It is rediculous for places like Marla to charge 20c/litre more than Coober Pedy when it is the same tankers that deliver to both. they are also the ones that deliver here in Alice and we are close to Coober Pedy in price usually so why the fuel price spike between CP and Alice?

Anyway now I have the Prados range I fill up here in Alice and can drive around Adelaide for a couple of days before filling up again.

Oh I never got to the P.O today so I will post you that item on Wednesday okay?

          Cheers

          • Yeah Yeah, don't sweat it Mav. No hurry. Whenever you can mate.

Un-believable! I've seen petrol go down in price again today! Diesel didn't budge at all. I can't be the only diesel consumer wondering about this I'll bet. Looks like Petrol buyers can pick and choose between stations at the moment for better prices. Looking at all the BP Ultimate Diesel around where I work and live though...... Exactly the same!

With the issues beginning surface surrounding the D4D in the D4D threads, I'm not sure I want to go the cheapy Gull Bio-D or Caltex Standard.

I also know a Station just heading North out of Perth that always has cheaper prices.... Why should it have cheaper Prices than the Central City locations?? You can but wonder. As you say Mav, what can we do but lump it?? I saw a guy on a scooter today in the pouring rain and driving wind on his way to work I guess. Is that what's coming? I have to buy a scooter?? :?

I had a cousin who used to ride a motorbike to work. After about two years he sold it saying it was just too dangerous and an accident waiting to happen. Said that he got absolutely no respect on the road and people were constantly not seeing him, pulling out in front of him, friggin flipping him off all the time, and cutting him off. Said he'd never again have a bike as a primary vehicle. Never ridden one in the city myself, but interesting comments though.

                        • This months 4x4 has a good article on this very topic.. if you own a 200 series diesel, then you are $4200 a year worse off than with the petrol.. Calculating the total cost of ownership.

However, the diesel Prado will cost you $1400 a year less than the petrol and has better resale value of 69%.

So verdict is in on actual costs. Now its just a matter of preference.

I'm over the whole diesel/petrol economy/running costs thing, it's all a pointless... you buy what suits your needs, not everybody elses.

Best thing for the diesel, range. Try going across the simpson or the canning. How far will you get towing a camper or caravan with a petrol. If you are not using your Prado for this, spend $60k on a upspec commodore.

Maybe I am 'old school' but people buy what they think best suits their needs (or should). All this BS about what costs more to run is stupid. I bought a diesel to tow my camper and get maximum range which mine does very well. I really do not care if it cost me more or less than a petrol version.
