  • Re: Is the diesel a false economy?

Hi Richo, when i bought my first prado they had a deal going and the diesel and petrol were both the same price, $49,999 drive away in december 2005. I must admit i didnt even price the petrol when i changed over recently and am suprised by the size of your discount $8800 seems like a lot. as to the power i upgraded from a diesel rodeo so the prado seemed like a ferrari by comparison.

everybody has their own set of circumstances and different prioritories, and in my case i reckon i could pay $8800 more and still come out in front remembering that the less you pay when you buy the less you get when you sell.

    Cheers Andrew

Whens this happening? Sounds quite interesting.
On the petrol note - I have no idea how you people can drive them, I drove one as recently as this week and they seem so gutless compared to my diesel, you basically have to ring its neck to get any decent performance out of it.

um nope.... thought it was very disappointing for a 4L V6 esp down low and didn't start to pull until 3000-3500 rpm.

Last weekend took our 150 v6 out with the Qld Pradopoint folks for the first time, look at the trip reports, I don't think we went over 2500rpm on the tracks when I had worked out how well it went. As a qualifier we have had 4WD's for 25 years an done some serious off roading and "geting there" is relative to skill. Good cars make it look easy but without skill it can still turn pear shaped.
              Regards, Richo.

I love our V6 120 series however I got a new diesel work ute the other week and just quitely I love it. I have never owned a diesel before (have driven them though but not for at least 15 years). Mind you in the diesel I have now, nothing and I mean nothing happens under 2000 rpm which is a bit annoying if trying to pull out into traffic. We looked at and test drove the D4D but as I wasn't able to test drive it on a motorway or open road to get a feel for overtaking type scenarios so went for the V6 and do not regret it. Also the cost of diesel fuel at the time was huge compared to unleaded. We don't do a lot of towing and there is always a servo when touring so the range argument is irrelevant to our situation.
Coincidently unleaded today was 139.9/L with a discount docket and diesel was 123.9/L without a docket

I went from 98 GXL V6 petrol manual to 09 GXL t/dsl auto. Smoother, easier to drive (especially tootling around off-road) and actually faster off the mark than the V6. The V6 felt faster when wound-up and over-taking but, to be truthful, I haven't really noticed much difference with the t/dsl. I've adjusted my driving style to suit the new engine/gearbox combo and have no problems passing roadtrains or slower motorists.

My work car is a t/dsl manual (Colorado) and it gets up and moves out nicely once cruising. Both cars are miles ahead of the old t/dsl Landrovers and Defenders that I used to drive in the military.

I reckon the auto is a better proposition for off-road as the box will select normally always select the right gear for the job so you get to enjoy the journey a little more and concentrate on where you are headed. I sometimes go for a couple of months before refuelling so it's a winner for me.

That's funny - I too have just gone from a 90-series 02 GXL V6 petrol manual to a 120 series - but mine is now an 08 GXL Petrol manual, and I came to exactly the same conclusions:

So you are changing way too many features in one go to make a proper judgement on the differences between petrol and diesel...
