LOL all the petrol owners trying to justify they're $8K cheaper. Sticker price is totally different to the price you pay when you sign on the dotted line. I paid less for my D4D than the current petrol special

      Well Guys

Filled up again in Matraville this morning, 141 litres @ $1.51.9. Totally amazing that this bloke is continually selling his diesel for 30 cents less than the servo down the road and has been for a month now. He could so easily put it up to the price of the others and rip us off but doesn't seem to want to. All in my favour I guess

Not too hard to get a good price. I paid $49,966.00 (GXL Diesel, Manual) including towbar and full window tinting. Add to that $2390 for the soverign alloy bullbar, $1695 for pre delivery, $2995 for stamp duty, $572 for rego, $344 for CTP and $38 for plate fees.

Also included a full tank of diesel and delivery to my house, floor mats, weather shields and bonnet and headlight protectors.

My total bill is 58k. I hope this helps anyone considering buying something similar. Most of my shopping around was on the phone and I had dealers who wanted to come to my house to make a deal. They were all very good salesmen so i opted to do all my haggling over the phone and avoid any person to person pressure that could be exerted.

I am sure that great deals can be obtained on the petrol models also. Perhaps even better deals as they seem to be struggling to move them at the moment.

Yes, sounds familiar. I paid a little over $57k driveaway for my 07 GXL D4D manual.. but that included a colour coded ARB Sahara bar with IPF fog lamps, IPF 900XS driving lights, 5 x cooper ATR's, Colour coded rear wheel cover, cross bars, full set of sand grabba mats, rear cargo mat, deluxe sheepskin seat covers for the front and toyota seat covers for the next two rows and tow bar.

when I check my books comparing repayments and running costs compared to my 04 V6 GXL, I'm well in front. I'm confident that this car will hold its value better than the petrol when it comes time to trade again. I'm very happy with it. My latest fuel figures are showing 11.1ltrs/100km for mixed driving. I was getting around 15-16ltrs/100km for the same driving in the petrol. (mine was a 4spd so I'm sure the 5spd auto will do better)..

I was suprised to read that some people were quoted $8k more for a Diesel !!! I can understand why that would make the Petrol a more attractive, after all the 4ltr is still a great engine and is probably class leading for the Petrol V6's.

Hey Blacksheep, Did you have any problems fitting the hardwheel cover over your Cooper ATR's? I'm assuming they are 265/65/17.

My dealer told me not to order the hardcover as it wouldn't fit over the ATR's. I pointed out that 265/65/17 ATR's are the same size as the standard Grandtreks, but he adamant that it wouldn't fit due to squarer shoulders on the ATR's. :?

Smithy, yes the cover fits, just... I have the 265/65/17. I had exactly the same on the petrol and it also had a cover. If you want to get a hard wheel cover and want ATRs, stick to the 65's and you'll be fine.

Do a search on the tyre size topic and there is about 450 posts on the subject.. no, most stock sized all terrain (square shouldered) tyres don't fit under the stock cover. My D694's won't fit under mine.
                    Hi Pradogxlv6,

Sorry - off topic I know ops:

Did search though- thats the reason for my post. Everyone else has said that the hardcover won't fit , Blacksheep is the first person I have been able to find that has fitted the hardcover over the Cooper ATR's .

                    Cheers,

                      To get back on topic....

For mine the decision between Petrol and Diesel was based on useage.

Petrol = Toorak tractor, maybe a trip tp the snow or a run up the Cooloola coast for a spot of fishing.

Deisel = Outback tourning, high country jaunts up and down step hills you can bearly walk up.

Conclusion, petrol for the city, deisel for the bush!

Talk about throwing grenades and running away!

Thats fine until you take into account the extra servicing and costs associated with the diesel and suddenly the Petrol is damn close if not better. Personally for mine I happily pay the extra as I prefer petrols and there would have to be a very real reason ( Living remotely or several remote, inland trips a year, etc) for me to buy a diesel.

I couldnt get any discount on the deisel, I suppose they have such a back log that they dont need to discount them.

The actual price difference as of today is $7000, so I did exaggerate slighty (only by a grand)

Your'e probably right, the salesman was trying to push me towards the petrol for sure......but I didnt need much pushing as the 6 month wait for the deisel was also a factor to consider.

But I must say Im well pleased with the car whatever the engine

I like to deal with facts and figures so here is just a few basic calculations on the running cost differences between diesels and petrols,

                                Servicing: Toyota supplied pricing

Cost of servicing a diesel up to 100,000km as per handbook by toyota = $3629

Cost of servicing a petrol up to 100,000km as per handbook by toyota = $3412

Saving of $217.00, Nothing to get excited about!! A $217 saving over 100,000km is pretty much bugger all.

Now cost of servicing diesel as above, except using toyotas service advantage upto 60,000km
                                = $2642

                                As above but pertrol
                                = $2641

                                Massive saving of $1 !!!!

                                Fuel:

Based on prices in my local area

                                Diesel $1.79/ltr
Cost to fill tank = $322.20
Distance capable based on toyota advertised fuel consumption = 1956km

                                Petrol $1.52
Cost to fill tank = 273.60
Distance capable based on toyota advertised fuel consumption = 1363km

$1 of fuel in a petrol will get you 4.98km
$1 of fuel in a diesel will get you 6.07km

                                Travelling 20,000km/year:

Petrol consumes 2640 litres at a cost of $4012.80
Diesel consumes 1840 litres at a cost of $3293.60

Saving of $719.20 per year!!! Thats $3596 over 100,000kms!!!
So the saving of $217 in servicing made by the petrol over 100,000km seems pretty insignificant compared to the $3596 saved in fuel by the diesel over the same distance. Using toyota service advantage, and the $1 saving the petrol makes completely destroys the servicing cost of diesel argument!!

Now you can argue forever on the difference in the purchase price of a petrol and diesel. That depends totally on your haggling skills (or who you know). Some people can get great discounts, some people just fork out for retail price without an argument. I, personally, got an $8k discount on my diesel, I was happy with that.

Another point which I havent researched, and really couldnt be bothered right now, is the cost of rego and insurance. As the rego cost is based on engine cubic capacity, surely the 4L V6 would cost more to register than the 3L Diesel. This may also have an effect on insurance? Correct me if I'm wrong.

On the basis of dollars and cents, I reckon the diesel comes up trumps. But all this doesnt mean jack if you prefer petrol or a petrol suits your needs. Horses for courses!!!! Diesel is not a false economy. Not until there is a $0.66 price difference in fuel costs.
