  • Freedom Fuels Bio Diesel

Has anyone had any experience with Freedom Fuels Diesel, it is now blended with 20% bio diesel, I found this out after I had put in 170 litres in the tank at Oxley in Brisbane. They have a small sticker on top of the bowser explaining this in small print. I had to put my glasses on to read it & move the pump hose out of the way.
I have heard that Toyota do not recomend any more than 5% bio diesel to be used in their diesel engines. Looks like we are going to have to be careful where we fill up now.

The fuel was up to 10cents a litre than other servos in the area :?: its not so cheap if it causes engine damage & Toyota tells you to go away & fight it out with the fuel companys.

Should it be the last time I fill up at Freedom Fuels :?:

About 3 weeks ago, I put about 160ltrs of Freedom Elite Diesel into mine. It felt as though it had lost a little bit of power and I also recorded my worst fuel consumption since new (mixed hwy & town) only got 1200 kms when I refuelled today, with 170ltrs of BP. Thats about 14.1ltrs/100km. I usually get around 11ltrs/100km. Thats more like my 04 petrol Auto !!!

I cant say if it was in fact the fuel, but I have only ever run BP or Shell and never had it run so dull and thirsty. I'll be sticking to my usual fuels from now on and paying the extra 4 or 5 cents/ ltr.

        Just my own experience.

Took the Prado on a 600klm round trip for work out on the hwy, I could not tell any difference in power & the engine runs as smooth as ever. I didnt need to detune my tunit module, its still set to the same setting.

My fuel consumption for the trip was slightly higher 11.2, my last trip to the same place using caltex was 10.8

From what I have read about bio diesel it is also good for cleaning your fuel tank and fuel lines.
So you may be up for a new fuel filter shortly

Same here - fuelledup at Freedom Eight Mile Plains and only noticed the biodiesel sticker after about a hundred litres so decided to fill up and check out the fuel filter after I'd run it through (I've got that filter with the glass bowl on the bottom....)

My engine didn't seem to run rough (not D4D though...) but absolutely crap fuel economy. I normally use either Bp or Woolies (I know, I've heard bad things but it seems to be alright) and where I'll normally get around 915 km before the 90litre light comes on, it came on now around 770.

I haven't been game to try the fuel again, much prefer to spend the extra few cents for regular and know what you're getting ....

I just filled up with Bio Diesel. 50/50 blend. The first thing I noticed was as soon as the fuel got up to the engine how much quieter it ran.

Haven't done a cold start yet, so I'll let you know. I haven't experienced the extreme diesel rattle like some others, but is a bit noisy on the cold mornings.

As the D4D has been available in the U.K for many years, I'd would be curious to know if they are suffering diesel rattle like some here are and whether they run Bio.

                  Bio Diesel

                  Hi Guys

Spoke to a guy today who works as repair/service guy for fuel companies. He works with pumps, bowsers, tanks etc for all major fuel companies and private enterprise in Central Coast/Hunter region. He reckons Bio Diesel has the same issues as Ethanol - in the way that the mix needs to be 100% spot on or else it can cause problems.

Since Ethanol came out, his major repair work on pumps became those using Ethanol. Bio Diesel pumps now rival this. Apparently he reckons the product is not the problem, but the mix. When you're dealing with the size tanks they have at fuel stations, the mix ratio is more a guestimate than an exact science.

Only one man's opinion - however he is a professional who deals with the with the fallout of incorrect ratio fuels on machinery on a daily basis.

                  Hmmmmmm.

Hi all i'm only relatively new to diesel, i got my 03 120series at the start of the yr.. i hav done a lil research into bio diesel but from what i can tell the biggest problem is the fact that it is a solvent rather than a lubricant. I decided to wonder down to our local Toyota dealership (Bruce Gowans Toyota, Located at Cooee, Tas) They basically said in a nut shell that the tollerances that the new fuel pumps run are simply to tight to run biodiesel, i did mention what about deffernent blends etc and he said he wasn't sure... But as i jus got some bad non-biodiesel fuel that seems to hav stuffed my fuel pump and now i can look forward to a nice bill anywhere from $1000 up to around the $5000 mark.. So i'm not sure if it is worth the saving if it may risk the fuel pump...

These are jus my thoughts on biodiesel.

                    Cheers Sam

So Bio Diesel wasn't the issue here, it was poor quality normal diesel?

I have a Peugeot common rail diesel that we run off bio-diesel. It hasn't missed a beat, and in fact we get better mileage from the B20 than regular diesel. Peugoet recommend that we use it.

Over here in WA Gull produce a B20 blend that meets all the Australian Diesel standards.

I tried to get Toyota to comment on why they this fuel didn't meet their standard, but only ever got the repsonse of "we recommend only a 5% blend".

I'm not yet game to fill up the D4D with the B20 as it will void warranty, if something goes wrong and toyota found out. Though I would have thought that the European cars that have been using it for some years now would have solved any problems. I think it's just that Australia don't have a recognised standard for Bio-diesel so car manufacturers are playing it safe.

I will probably start adding some after the first year, but keep it below the 5% mark over all (ie add 1/4 of a tank), and see if there are any issues.

                        Cheers,
                        Ray.

Thanks Begs for the reply. Strange how Toyota's thinking is different to Peugeot.

I put 157 litres of 50/50 Bio in the D4D. Noisier when cold, but quieter when warm. Humming along quite nicely and looks like I'm getting the same fuel economy.

No it wasn't bio-diesel but jus the way i am looking at it is that the saving isn't worth the risk until it is more refined and a more exact measurement and the info avaliable is far out waying the risk of a fuel pump needing rebuild..
