  • What to do with a blown up engine

    Hi guys,

Unfortunately my faithful Prado has blown its engine on the way home from holidays.
It had just clocked up 200K and was running fine on the expressway towing a moderate load of about 900kgs, when all of a sudden I noticed some smoke behind me.
At first I thought the trailer brakes had jammed but when I stopped the engine was idling quite rough so I shut her down.
When I got out I saw the oil at the back of the car and when I lifted the bonnet there was heaps of oil around the vent tank and a bit of oil around the EGR area.
There were no warning lights and the engine turns over for a few seconds and stops like it is hydraulic locking.

I haven't stripped it down yet but I'm thinking I may have cracked one or more pistons.

As I was in the initial stages of looking for a new car I am uncertain where it is worth fixing it or just selling it off and cutting my losses.

If there is anyone with a similar experience who can give me some idea of what I may have done and how much it will cost to fix, I would love to hear from you.

Alternatively anyone who is interesting in buying a project I am open to offers, the car is in Sydney and I have a free towing credit to a repair location in Sydney.

    That's how they go!
We just don't hear about so many here.
All the things you need to do in prevention were written here for years UNTILL irresponsibly removed.
I have been working on some awareness & doing what I can to improve reliability for Prado owners.
Sorry if the information did not get you in time.
Just google Prado Hilux 1kd-ftv injector egr & you should see the light. Sorry too late.

New long motor from Toyota about $8000? Plus fitting, it's worth it!
Great cars & worth the repair, a new heart for the beast will be much better & cheaper than buying a much more expensive, more technologically advanced bunch of environmental protection to wreck your engine in no time problem vehicle.
Don't get a rebuild. Just a new crate engine from Toyota. $9,000-12,000?

    Or sell it for $8000.
    Spend $70,000.

Depends also on how much you have invested in accessories for the vehicle, is it set up the way you want it. Expensive exercise to do it again to a new car but you do say you are considering a new vehicle anyway. Hard decision.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input and sympathy.

What's the difference between a crate engine and a long motor?

Don't go a rebuild, it'll never be the same and never as good as it was originally. For me, once it happened I lost all faith in the vehicle and was glad to finally sell it. My advice, if you've been considering an upgrade anyway, cut your losses and offload as is. Or at least weigh up what you could sell it for as is V what you will realistically get selling it after fixing it and is it financially worth pouring $10k into it.

Having been through an engine I sympathize with you. You haven't told us what year or engine. If it's later model 120 with D4D then it might be worth repair with new motor as per others comments. If it's pre D4D then the money to be spent may be better used on a deposit for a new Toy(ota) Prado. With 200,000km it's likely that other parts will soon be due for replacement. With labour for fitting, coolants, injectors etc you may be faced with a bill or $15K or more.

Thanks again guys, as per my footer tag it's a late 2007 D4D auto with the safety pack and an ARB steel bar and Bilstien shocks.
But it is all getting a bit tired.
This has really left a bad taste in my wife and I's mouth with regards to Toyota's legendary reliability.
We are now considering what we once thought we would never do and that's go back to a Land Rover Discovery.
It looks like Ford may have sorted them out and at $70K for a base model we are going to at least do a test drive.
Anyway we'll see the market is very limited when it comes to real off road wagons.

Oh and with regards to the mods removing posts you may find that Toyota threatened them with some pretty heavy legal action, so they probably had no choice.

My screen config didn't let me see your footer - sorry about that.

Land Rover Discovery? They have a really good road-side assist program.................for a reason.

OK, thank you for correcting me.

Good roadside assist, that's good to know :-).

So are you guys seeing Disco 4s broken down everywhere, like the earlier ones?
