  • Process to clean Intake Manifold and Block EGR - 1kz-te

    Hi Guys,

I'm sorry if I've missed something, I've trailed every forum search function, spent hours on google/youtube and still cannot find a single DIY video/guide to do this on my car.

The threads I have found have either had photos removed or have been archived.

I am new to this engine, I do know however my way around an engine bay.

I'm simply looking for some instructions on what to do/what not to do - Pictures/video would be amazing!!!

Even if someone could simply point out with their hand and capture with phone video camera.

Obviously I've found plenty of threads regarding EGR and blanking plates etc, however it's incredibly hard to find pictures/diagrams/video's.

    I have 2004 KZJ120R TD Manual GXL - 100,000kms.

Just purchased ! so looking to keep her in top notch condition (even though she looks immaculate already)

    I really appreciate any assistance.

    Regards

Sent you a PM then realized you are talking about the 1KZ. I thought it was all different on this engine. Check the PM anyway.

I think I’ll need a few more beers or a solid glass of red before I can follow that, ARK!

So how did you guys go?

I have a 2004 3.0l Grande TD Prado, pretty sure its the 1KZ-TE, I had read these dont have EGR however.

Those russian instructions are a nightmare....enough to put me off attempting to clean the inlet manifold for sure.

My car It has become very sluggish and uses heaps of fuel (16-17/100 although freeway is about 15), loathed to take to Toyota - cause that will cause squillions, it did get a good dip and bog hole last year, got stuck and stationery for about 5 mins until I got the winch anchored, very muddy silty water, and the transmission got water in it through a defective pan gasket that toyota replaced a few years ago with previous owner - I fully flushed out/complete trans fluid and filter replacement, but seem to still have lost 4th Low (goes 1-2-3) - otherwise gears seem ok.

It was never fast or nippy, but I just drove a friends 120 prado of same era engine (6months near than mine) and it had heaps more power -especially on take off - and when I checked his trip (second time i have done this) he gets 12.2 Avg around town - before the water incident, mine at best was 13.2 on freeways, 14.5 normal, but is now sitting at 16.5 after the water incident - the only thing his has that mine doesn't is a snorkel, which i know can make some differences - but I think there is an underlying issue.

When the water got in I also did the basic service myself as well (so it might be that too - hard to tell) I replaced:
              - transmission fluid Penfolds FS ATF - because of water
              - diff oil front and back (penfolds again - as per specs Repco said)
              - transfer case fluid (enfolds/repco)
              - oil / oil filter (mineral oil from burnsons - realised I could have used lower viscosity FS oil - but already had some left from last time and this didn't seem to be a problem - it was VERY Black this time however)
              - air filter (recpco)
              - fuel filter (repco)

I suspect the fuel filter for some reason, I wondered if I put it on the wrong way round...kit works though it seems

The turbo does come in but perhaps is lagging a lot . Perhaps it has silt in it and needs a clean.
I wonder about valve timing/ clearances - but no idea who is best to do these

Reason I posted here is I wondered about intake manifold - I guess that could be chugged up ...

Although the engine never stopped, I also wonder if perhaps the water got into the silencer and has restricted the exhaust some how.....?

              Perhaps I should sell it....

Ok perhaps not then, looking in the manual its more like the 1KD-FTE engine layout.
Apparently does have EGR valve and apparently does have a air flow sensor
so going to start with checking airflow sensor

it looks nothing like the 1KZ-TE in the photos in the manual, everything on wrong side, round air filter etc
On the other hand its also not the same as the 1KD-FTE either....

                it looks like this

Penfolds? Isn't that the cheap plonk that pensioners and old deros drink? I don't think I'd use it in case some old drunken warb comes around and tries to steal it from my car and drink it.

                    2004 3.0l would be a 1kz-te with egr.
the 1kd was from 2006 onwards i thought.....

Doh - I knew I mixed up the shopping, the wife really complained about the Penrite red wine that night, she thought the 20l drum it came in was quite good though.

so if it has EGR, then it might be worth getting it all cleaned and EGR blanking plate put in....a mate had that done on his Pajero, I didn't think I even had it though.

She didn't get drunk but she sure was slippery.

that pic looks to be a 90series without intercooler.

yours should have the intercooler if its 2004. Check the vin plate, should have engine code there.

Well the Prado problem is solved, two days before it goes in for dyno tune. Thanks to fourbydiesel /############# - for the suggestion to check the map filter. WTF is a MAP filter I thought so grabbed a glass of penrites ;-) and checked out Google.
I unclipped it from the thingymajig (inter cooler) and blew through the it . Seemed ok. Ends looked a bit dark so I let petrol seep in and blew it out, black stuff, repeated until it blew clean petrol both ways. Let dry for a minute, back in car, quick test ride and it is definately more responsive ! Fuel consumption also back to around 13.5 (way better than 18.5)
Thanks everyone for help and funny comments too . I can now feel confident about getting rear suspension done.
