  • High revs in 120 diesel '09

    Hi PradoPoint'ers,
My KDJ120R is reving high whilst driving and wondering some possible problem shooting ideas, did a search but couldn't pin point anything.
New bailey injectors 30,000km ago and duel battery installed 15,000km ago with no issues thus far
Vehicle has 110k on the clock
Car has been parked up for 4 weeks but started and let run for 10 mins weekly
First drive of 100km distance was fine engine wise, cruise control cut out though, turned on again when engine re-started on return leg
On the second drive the problem started:
    80km - should be 1,600rpm, currently reving at 2,300rpm
    100km - should be 1,900rpm, currently reving at 2,700rpm
110km - should be at 2,100rpm, currently reving at 2,900/3,000rpm
Just went for a third drive then and it's still reving high
Anyone had this issue before or ideas of what I should be looking at?
    Thanks guys
    Matt

    Its an Auto?

Sounds like it might be a problem with the tranny. Could it be the torque converter lockup isn't engaging?

Mine is a manual, so not a lot of help here...

Nothing to do with the engine. Is this happening in D have you tried manually shifting gears, sounds like overdrive is not locking up.

Thanks guys, correct, it is an Auto
I tried knocking it back a gear several times, put the foot down to see if it would just correct after a bit of a rev out but no good.
Going for a drive now so will check the revs in 4th to see if they remain normal about 3,000rpm at 110km or if it's reving higher than normal in 4th
        Cheers

Ok, been for two drives, first 40km then the second 25km
Got me stumped now, vehicle did not over rev once and was driving as normal as ever
If it was the overdrive not locking into place, what steps need to be taken to inspect/repair the possible fault, a dedicated transmission place or quality diesel mechanic will be able to sort out?
Anyone else had this occur before and if so, what was the fix?
          Cheers

Is there a 'hold' button on the gearstick or something?

              Hi fellas,
              Just an update on this.
Found out it was somehow linked to the cruise control. Was driving along the highway, cruise control cut out, light on dash out, car revs high when you retouch the accelerator to maintain h'way speed, accelerator pedal goes very firm. So pull over the vehicle, turn off, lock/unlock, turn back on and cruise control light turns back on and continue driving with no issues
It would do this once every 4-5 weeks and didn't think much of it as turning the car off then back on 3 sec later corrected the computer glitch.
Went to start the vehicle yesterday and no cruise control at all, vehicle driving normal with no high revs but accelerator pedal is very firm and takes a fair bit of pushing in to get the vehicle moving compared to previous.
Is a faulty cruise control the problem here?
I would have thought if cruise control was not working then the car should just drive normal, not rev high or stiff accelerator.
              Any one experienced this before?
              Cheers

If you have a noticeably stiff throttle pedal then I would certainly be looking at the accelerator position unit on the throttle pedal assembly next to the brake pedal. The accelerator pedal unit is fully electronic with no mechanical connection to the engine so if it is stiff I would start here. A faulty unit here could certainly play havoc with the cruise control and the engagement of lockup torque convertor.

                  Thanks Marco
Sounds like that is the place to start looking
Anyone had to replace their pedal sensor/pedal assembly unit before?
                  cheers

Going in tomorrow for a diagnosis.
Just wondering if anyone would have a part number for the unit?
Should it prove faulty and the unit is stuffed, just want to check with Toyota on the price.
First time into this workshop so don't want to be taken to the cleaners
                    Cheers
