  • Oil Pressure Light on Start Up

    Hi Guys,

I've just noticed that the oil pressure light (red) stays on for around 3-4 secs on start up.

Is this normal with the 1KD D4D, my car is an 08 Prado?

    Appreciate your feed back.

    Thanks.

Without sounding like a public service announcement: "have you checked your prostate lately?"

Have you checked your oil pickup lately? :-)

The car currently has 255,000km, I bought it with 248,000. After purchasing the car I was stung with the white smoke on start up, I immediately dropped the sump and yes pickup was blocked.
My mechanic cleaned it up, after that I took it straight to a diesel mechanic who checked the injectors seats and found that injector 1 seat was shot, he replaced all injector seats. No more white smoke. He said my injectors were fine.

I have done a recent oil change only last week. I did notice oil seemed pretty thin and came out like a pressure blaster for the first few seconds, not sure if this is normal. Oil was only 5,000km since the pickup was cleaned. Unfortunately I didn't check pick up, didn't think I needed to since I've done everything recently.

I honestly don't know if the oil pressure light issue was occurring prior or when I first bought the car. But I have only taken notice now. It does it on dead cold start up and when I don't drive it for 2hrs. If i turn off and turn on when car is warm it does not occur.

So in summary , Seats and oil pick up done around 5,000km ago. Don't know what type of injectors they are. I used Delo400 oil with Ryco filter.

Here's a video of the startup. This was around 2hrs after shutting down. Cold morning it feels like it hangs around for another second or so.

Given the state of the injectors was the sump screen cleaned?

If say check the oil pick up.
You will have some damage from the oil starvation.

Side note, if they are original injectors, they are over due for replacement.

You running a genuine filter or after market crap ?? Possibly oil running from filter so needs to refill it first on start up. Seen it before with ryco filter.

                        I'm running a Ryco filter.

The filter I removed before that was a blue cooper filter, it was bone dry when I removed it. I thought that is normal because of the way it sits, naturally oil will fall down.

Should have a non return valve in it to stop it from draining. Mine which is a V6 sits with the opening facing down and when I spin it off to replace it I have oil piss out of it which then drains down into a oil catch around the filter housing which then drains through a little hole which I believe in the diesels run through a rubber hose down to just behind the sump plug underneath where as the for some reason Toyota didn't put the tube on so I place a small bottle under drain hole... Cheers

Whether they are rip off genuine crap or ryco crap, Unless you have recently run the vehicle, i find they come off fairly dry & drained.
I see you have checked the pickup, I was suggesting to check again.
Although I don't think it's blocked, it's worth a look at each oil change.
You can get some debris from previous blow by accumulating.

But, I suspect, possible wear from lack of lubrication? From when it was blocked.
It may be worth an oil pressure test.
Given once the oil light comes on its too late, you can't trust it too much.
