  • Strong diesel smell.

Hi. I have a 120s 1kz-te a few months ago it started to produce a very strong diesel smell that lingers, when you stop at lights it smells, if the prado is half way out of the garage the smell will fill the garage, the 120 performs well I have checked the exhaust no leeks , has anyone else experienced the same problem and if so how do you fix it.

I just did an oil change on my 230k's 2004 1KE-TE using Penrite 10W-40. I drained the oil and measured 7L so i added 7L of my penrite back in. A after 40 minutes of city driving i notice a gas like smell. It wasnt a diesel or engine oil smell. Im really unsure. The sump plug is clean no signs of any leak.

Would certain fuels give a stronger diesel smell than normal also could blocking the egr cause it to smell more.

no and no is my guess. Not that I know a great deal about diesel but no one else is complaining I have had a couple of H motor diesel Toyota's (slow bloody things they were).
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

i found out the smell was from my subtank. my goal was to empty as much from both tanks as possible before filling up for a snow trip using Alpine Diesel. The big danger with running on low is all the settlement at the bottom of both tanks. That i'll fix after my high country trip by draining both tanks manually.

Is it a str8 Diesel smell? Like a leak?
Or a running rich, injectors worn smell?

It is a strong diesel smell, the injectors were replaced at 195k the 120 is now at 240k runs well I have been using Costco fuel for the past 7 mths, I'm thinking of going back to shell or Caltex to see if there is any difference, a friend called in today with a bt50 and could only smell light diesel fumes from his car he uses caltex.

Check the rubber convoluted hose that connects the tank/s filler tube.
Had to recently replace the front tank hose after noticing the over powering smell of petrol.
The hose had gone quite hard and was weeping via a slight crack between the ribs.
This hose is located above the rear diff, it connects the steel tube from the filler cap to the front tank.
Pretty straight forward exchange of parts, with a worm drive hose clamp at each end.
Toyota parts department where cheaper than Ebay.
Hope this helps you eliminate a possible cause Brilie.
                    Cheers

Where do you think your pick up is from, the bottom of the tank, otherwise your usable tank capacity has reduced by 30 litres.
