  • D4D problems seems VERY widespread

    Folks,

google D4D engine problems ...... the problem appears global and not limited to the Prado 3 litre D4D in Australia. Perhaps the injector system is too high tolerance/high tech for diesel fuel anywhere ?

Not happy Jan , having just taken delivery of one 3 weeks ago and intending to keep for retirement :x

The car is smooth and quiet compared to the NP Pajero just sold however I had zero trouble with the car and was expecting even better from Toyota.

I understand Toyota had similar problems with early 4.2 turbo diesels with bigend bearing failures at about 120,000kms. Toyota originally denied any liability but the problem became widespread and undeniable so eventually were repaired by Toyota even though outside the warranty period.

The D4D issue must go the same way , particularly with the internet so effectively connecting those with problems. I am hopeful Toyo will have a fix as this problem aside it's a really good vehicle.

    Hi Brian
your opinion sounds rather alarmist. You say D4D problems are "very widespread". you don't elaborate on what the problem/s are.
The D4D engine (that is the 3.0 L D4D) has been sold overseas since 2002. and put in many vehicles not just Prados.
I don't know the precise numbers, but several hundred thousand D4D engines must have been sold over this time. Of course there will be some problems in some engines, as with any other mechanical device.
My research on the net doesn't reflect your view, quite the contary, the D4D seems to be a relatively reliable motor.
I think posts in P P reflect this.
I'd be interested to see the links to the websites you've been viewing

D4D engine problem ....post in wrong position

Sorry people , this should have been posted as Reply under "Deisel Rattle in D4D Prado" thread which lists a growing problem here in Australia.

Perhaps a moderator can move it ?

well put. all engines will give someone somewhere grief. i don't doubt the ratio of unreliable to reliable would be greatly swayed to the latter.

I certainly hope it is alarmist however the 9 pages of posts by regular PP'ers in the thread "diesel rattle in D4D prado" suggests the problem is larger than anyone would consider normal. And more so, certainly not normal for Toyota.

After going through this repair process and the talk I have just had with the service dept at the Toyota dealership I would be very hesitant in recommending anyone purchase a D4D at this stage.

Maybe further down the track when they have perfected the technology but it would seem that the current crop of engines are prone to early injector failure.

They said that this problem is widespread around the country and Toyota has set a process in place to deal with the injector failures as they occur. This says that Toyota expect early injector failure with the D4D engine.

              Cheers,
Cannot get the injectors from Denso as they are out of stock. So they did a patch job using the best injector from a batch they removed from another Prado suffering the same problem. So in effect they have used a secondhand worn part to get us mobile enough to get home and hopefully back down when they take receipt of the 4 new injectors.

My real worry is that they did not have any new seals when they fitted this dodgy injector and from what Wolfgang has written in the Rattle thread it could cost me an engine.

Time to document this all in writing and send a offical complaint to Toyota Australia. From the sounds of what I read on the internet, they may have a few letters already from others. You need to document everything, to protect your warranty and cover your arse; in case the engine fails.

I have done this in the past with customers (highway trucks) that persisted in using trucks with damaged engines or parts. It does work and it will provide you a safety net for any future damage.

                Cheers ears,
I will be doing that for sure Matt.

Personally I don't see a need for alarm. Especially in the case of new vehicles. My daily drive is an may07 D4D with 60K. Yes, its noisy at startup on a cold morning, but imo I dont see that as a major catastraphy. If its shits itself then It will get fixed under warranty, but theres no need to ride toyota until then.

I guess we all need to assess how we approach the problem and do what we feel we want to do.

But what it it "Shits" itself miles from anywhere!!! Mav seems to do quite a few long trips and the last thing he needs is the D4D falling over.

The biggest issue that I see is the lack of comunication relating to this from toyota, ands the fact it changes day to day. Look at Masso's post, all very helpful one minute, no comment the next.

I'm dealing with a large toyota dealer at the moment re warranty replacement of a rusted sunroof. The dealer originally told me he had never even heard of the Corrosion Perforation Warranty, the next hes telling me its not covered because its done too many kms. Changed his tune quickly when I emailed him the page out of the manual stating unlimited kms!!! Just semms that we have payed good money for this car and there support is poor.

The other problem I have with the D4D is if you get a dodgy batch of fuel you can kiss the Pump and maybe injectors goodbye. Why even bother with the filter if it can't protect the fuel system.

I know I'd rather drive a toyota than a Kia. Heard an interview on the ABC today, a fella bought a brand new Kia 15 months ago, Kia's after service is so good they've given him 3 brand new engines to go with it.
The last 2 replaced the original
Great after sales service, crap car!

                          i agree with matt.
have it all noted down - sorry typed on a toyota dealer job card,
so if in the future something happens, you can go back to that.
as for the comparison to the 1HDFTE 4.2lt bigends being done outside the warranty period,
toyota released "fix" and this was sent to the owners that had contacted toyota and dealers, firstly.
so have your say with the dealer and ensure it is noted against the vehicles file.
that way, and i reakon it will, when toyota release a fix, and they still have limited supply.
dealers will have say 10 sets, and these will go the the top 10 on the dealers list,
and as more become availible, they will be done as per the list, or
                          the squeaky wheel.
either way, toyota couldn't afford to have it go on to long, as they don't want bad reputation.
their name says "good quality product".
so when they have the fix, the owners will find out quickly.

I havebeen reading the two threads in regards to the diesel issues...somewhat discomforting as I await my delivery

But a question....can an aftermarket fuel filter be fitted and it possibly help alleviate some of the problems :?:

If so does anyone have any suggestions :?: Where to buy etc :?:

One faulty car does not mean they are all faulty. Using that logic and based on my delivery experience all the autos must be faulty...
