  • Re: Power Chip

Spoke with a chap who seemed to know a fair bit about diesel performance enhancing chips.
Deals with a few different types, but recommended Unichip and exhaust system upgrade.
Obviously a little more complicated than "plug and play".
He installs, then tunes it up with his dyno and laptop.
A tad under $3000 for the chip, dyno tune, and pipes.
Didn't recommend chipping without bigger pipes.

Anybody out there with a Unichip installed?

And how do those PPers with performance chips get around insurance companies?

I priced others but for $700 extra I could get a Toyota genuine part, so there was no question which way to go for me.

Toyota will probably install these on the new generation Prado.

Is that right 96kW to 150 kW and 343 Nm to 510 Nm?

Is the drive train, motor components rated for that? I guess if Tojo genuine part, then Tojo could tell you if a kz Prado could take on a the power and torque.

If a yes I want one...

I just had a chipit unit installed today and the first thing I must say is Bloody hell do these things go    . My 2007 prado use to run out of puff at about 3300 rpm but when this chip was put in it felt like it had a lung transplant. I decided to do the chip prior to the exhaust so I had a comparison to work from. Justin up at Chipit threw in a custom tune for my rig as I wanted the torque for towing and didnt want to risk any EG Temp issues untill the funds build for the new exhaust. He installed the unit and tuned it up while driving. This thing pulls harder through the revs to the point where it feels like v6 petrol but will just pull away in any gear. I need to get the boat on the back just so I avoid speeding tickets but even then I could be in trouble. I am going to get it Dyno tested soon and see the difference to see if the coin is well spent. I will keep an eye on fuel consumption over the next tank or so and see how we go but I think from early results this chip will stand out. The unit comes with a switch in the cab which can select change the programming on the unit. I can select mild or rev head from the flick of a switch. I can also disable the unit and go back to standard Toyota prechip if required. Stay tuned and I will post some results from the dyno and see the change

none at the moment. The power being delivered now is pretty smooth right across the rev range. It spins over so much more freely with this chip. I have had it over 4000 rpm with Justin in tuning it and didnt see a cracker. I think this could be given an even higher setting but without the exhaust upgrade its not one I would risk. It has also taken away the turbo lag when acelerating off which was a bit of a problem if you werent use to it. Im sure if it wasnt constant 4wd the Mickey T's would break traction on the rear. The only thing strange is the scanguage now shows me a negative boost setting when at idle. Im pretty sure the chip tricks the computer to thinking it hasnt given enough boost which separates this chip from others. Im still smiling with the results and if your in perth drop me a PM. 8) 8)

Okay gents, the results are in. My 2007 Prado is a bog standard auto except for a set of 265 x 70 x17 Micky T Baja 4 rib. The Increase in tyre size has kept the starting power and torque pretty low but with the chip this is more than compensated. The speedo with these tyres now measures spot on to gps.

The starting power on the 4 wheel dyno was 78.9kw at 68kmh. The reading once the Chipit unit was activated was 107.8kw @ 68kmh. This gave it a power increase of about 36%.
The starting Torque was 304.4nm at 60kmh and with the chip on it put out 427.3nm. It has come up a staggering 40.4%.

The difference in this car is astonishing   . I was pretty concerned with the heat coming out of the exhaust as mine is only standard but Justin from Chipit has had quite a few others with similar tunes and it hasnt been a problem. He has given higher output tunes to cars with 3" bent mandrel units and this will be the next step. I have monitored my scanguage and can see my fuel coming down as well and I have had a lead foot the last week enjoying my new car so the fuel figures will be interesting. Consider the Chipit unit if you guys are going to go down that path. I would also get them to install it and get a custom tune as well. For people lucky enough to live in Perth, Justin who is one of the owners knows this product back to front and he is the bloke putting it under the bonnet so I cant recomend him and his product highly enough. The only thing I will say is his prices are very competitive but im sure once word gets out they will definitely go north.

I have a 2009 TD 3L Auto and am looking into a ROO Systems (Chip & 3" Mandrel Bent Exhaust).

I do a bit of towing (Trackabout Camper Trailer) and a bit more power would be great.

                Cost is just over $3000.

Has anyone installed a ROO System or have any information.

                Cheers,

Gday i'm new here, just purchased 2006 gx with d4d to replace the ranger and to be honest the prado is a slug in comparison . which is why im looking at chips etc

currently funds don't stretch that far. with those who have upgraded the exhaust only. does it improve the turbo lag etc, is it noticeable
as fitting a larger dump pipe and removal of the muffler for a pipe piece would improve breathing and be far cheaper for now.
                  any thoughts welcome.

Have replaced the exhaust on the D4D after sliding backwards into a stump 4wding in the Vic High Country before Christmas, and bending and kinking the original where it rises over the rear axle. Probably to 1/2 normal cross section area. Poor Prado struggled with noticeable sluggishness esp up hills.
Went with Beaudesert 2.75" system and found that while the power / torque gains weren't immediately noticeable, what was noticeable was that everything just seems to happen so much more smoothly.
And for whatever reason it seems even better after 2000km. ECU re-learnt?
And there's been a 7-10% improvement in fuel economy over 2 tankfuls (tanksful?) (Was 11.5l/100km, now 10.5)
Now looking at purchasing a chip - undecided between Steinbauer (alters fuel injection pulse duration) vs DP Chip (seems it alters injection pulse duration, and increases common rail pressure) vs Chipit (increases common rail pressure and ups turbo boost).
                    Correct me if I'm wrong.
Watching / reading these threads not helping the decision. Seems no complaints from Steinbauer users, a few negative issues have occurred for some DP users, and only limited reports about Chipit (but none negative).
                    Cheers

                    • Re: Power Chip

Went to the 4x4 show in Brisbane on the weekend. The Steinbauer chip rep said the chip doesn't work in cruise control as it needs the signal from the accelerator pedal to work. This seems a bit strange to me as i do a lot of towing and unless the hill is big i normally leave it in cruise until boost reaches 11psi (scan gauge) then i will turn it off to limit the RPM. Does any one know if this is correct?
I would prefer to have the extra torque available when in cruise and DP and Tunit say there chips work all the time.

Also nearly all the chip suppliers are rated at the same power/torque increase so what is the advantage of one over the other. Presently i am looking at the Tunit, mainly for the explanation from the staff at the show, they really knew there stuff.

Rusty, I believe there are a number of chips that are inactive when you engage Cruise Control so what the rep has said is correct. I think it's dependant upon the chip being located before or after the ECU. you would need to check but I believe that the ChipIt chip still works. I recall asking them last year in relation to this and believe that they said it still works. I think DP dosn't work with Cruise but again you would need to check.

Thats good to know about the cruise control. I have been thinking about going a chip for no other reason than to help stop the auto hunting gears when the cruise is on, especially when towing. so that info will make a big difference in which way i go.

                          Exhaust first though

Ive got the Chipit unit and the cruise control works fine. The cruise use to drop between 4th and fifth all the time and wouldnt hold but now with the extra torque its a dream to do the long hauls with.

                              • The cruise will still work no matter which unit we use as this is controlled via the original electrics. I have found with the Tunit installed the car will stay in higher gears for longer, mainly from the chip altering the throttle percentage. From what i can understand the standard setup for gearchange (auto) needs a throttle position and rpm to decide what gear to sellect, now with the Tunit the parammeters have been changed. One thing i have noted is the scangauge is harder to calibrate. This would be the throttle percentage as before. Now it will hold to taller gears for longer and, by the scangauge will not change down until approx 20 l/100 when before was 16 l/100. Over performance is a bit better (seat of pants) and fuel consuption is still to be calculated. The biggest improvement to date is the ability to hold taller gears for longer making cruising better.
This seems to be the same result as the Scotts post above.
