With the filters & oils available today the 5000klm service intervals are not requiered unless you use the vehicle in extreme conditions, eg: using it as a Taxi in constant start stop city driving or constant off road use, most other manufacturs have changed their service intervals to at least 15,000klm & up to 50,000 klms without any adverse effects on engine reliability or longeveity, As usaul Toyota is slow to react to new technology & is happy to charge you more often for services when they arent requiered, got a quote on my 80 series for 100,000 k service by a Brisbane toyota dealer, quoted me $1200, when I asked him why the high cost he told me that the wheel bearings needed changing, I told him that was not listed on this service, his reply was, we like to change them every 20,000k regardless of whats in the service book, as you can guess they didnt get my business, from my experience with Toyota their services arent about you having a reliable vehicle but are used to maximise Toyotas profit margin

      Are you kidding
      5000km oil intervals.
What sort of engine is this, one to avoid if it is this High a maintenance.
With the world oil shortage this 5k interval is irresponsible.

No offence but I think the extra 7L of oil is the least of the worlds oil problems. Thats less than 7km in a road train. Or about 70kn in my Prado. All relative really. My 2c.

No offence taken, this is what the forum is all about.
7 litres to fill your engine is not much. But you are not the only one.
Toyota Prado is one of the most popular cars in Australia. How many Toyata Prado's in the world.
If every Diesel Prado has the oil changed every 5k that is a lot of oil.
As far as road trains go they are not changed at 5k intervals. Some might go 30k or more as they are normally managed maintained by oil analysis.
The Mercedes VIto has service intervals of 22,500km.

Point taken on the amount of Prados.
With the truck thing I was referring to oil as in oil or diesel or petrol. I meant if that was turned to diesel it wouldn't drive a vehicle very far.
At the least to do 5000km's a D4D will burn 500 litres of diesel so my thought was 7 litres of oil isn't much in comparison.
I definitely get your point though. We do need to look after the oil we have left.

              5000K services

I do 10K service but use good oil.
Having the dealer supplying the oil it was stuffed after 5K
Using www.amsoil.com I get over 10K. Oil has been tested and can't extend any longer due to fueling (Fuel in the oil). No point in putting in a bypass filter either as this does not remove the fueling.

                  Hi Mtunny
I have been thinking about using Amsoil and just do the 10k service
Do you get it tested everytime or have just had it tested a couple of times to determine the interval to use? With your 10k servicing, what sort of driving do you do.
Was there still some leeway at 10k or was it pretty well stuffed at that point
Interesting about the bypass filter as well as I was thinking about one of those as well

                  cheers

i service mine every 5000km, i think doing the extra service will reward ya in the long run, as mines out of warranty, stuff payin someone else to do what i can do myself.

It is but it's inevitable especially in a diesel but it's influenced a lot by the sort of driving you do. Freeway cruising will create a lot less than cold stop/start driving.

This is a very interesting topic. When I bought my 90 series TD in 2001 I was more than a bit disappointed that it needed oil and filter changes every 5,000km. My previous TD (the other P word) had 10,000km service intervals. But I dutifully changed the oil and fliter every 5,000 km on the 90 and let a dealer or other service agent do the 10,000km services. Both of which seemed to come up pretty regularly when you do 25,000+ km per year. No big deal, about an hour on the odd weekend but tedious nonetheless, disposal of the oil and filter, keeping oil on hand etc etc not to mention the mess that it seems only used diesel oil can create.

One of the things I made sure of when I bought the D4D was that services were (at least) 10,000km. Plenty of other manufacturers of higher performance SUV diesel engines have service intervals of 20,000km or more.

I even confirmed the 10,000km service interval in writing because there is provision in the D4D service booklet for 5,000km servcies.

"With the new Turbo Diesel engine servicing is only required Every 10,000klms the 5,000klm servicing is only for extreme operating Conditions only i.e. Mining vehicles."

I should note at this point that the 90 series service book also made recommendations for 2,500km oil/filter changes under extreme or severe conditions. The 100 series also had/has the same recommendations.

When I had my 'free' inspection done on the D4D the service label says see you at 10,000km. Then shortly after this I had the 90 serviced by the same dealership before I put it up for sale. It was the 150,000km service with timing belt, tensioner etc. The label on the 90 stated next service 160,000km. When I asked about this I was told that Toyota have extended the intervals on all diesels to 10,000km if using Toyota or another high quality engine oil.

I did the 5,000km services previously eventhough I think they were overkill. I have no intention of doing 5,000km services now unless I subject the D4D to severe or extreme conditions and the oil is affected. But how to tell? Without testing it is very hard. New oil is dirty in a diesel the moment you fire it up so that is no guide. My less than scientific solution is to watch how long it takes the oil light to go out. Trust me any variation here is easy to see and it will tell you if your oil is thinning (fuel contamination) or if the filter is a little loose (as I found out after a dealer service a couple of years back).

                            Re: 5000k Servicing.

                            Hi All

Sorry to raise this old chestnut again but this is an interesting one with seemingly quite a bit of conflicting info being handed out by the dealers.

I have serviced my KZ120J TD Prado 120 (late 2004 model) religiously at the 5,000 km intervals but have noticed that Toyota are now specifying a 10,000 km service interval (they have been saying this for the past 18 months or so). When I challenged this today I was told "Well the engine will last longer if you service it every 5,000 km, but you can do it at 10,000 km intervals".

As most of the driving is on blacktop, has anyone else noticed any adverse effects by extending their service interval out to 10,000 km on the non - D4D engine?

                            Thanks

                              Re: 5000k Servicing.

I have a 06 1kz-te and my last 5000km service was about 3000kms over due.
I have found that my fuel economy gets worse when service intervals are getting close, this became much more noticealble the longer I left it.
secondly, the oil feels alot thicker due to the added soot build up.
I will NEVER let my 5000km service run over due again and would advise anyone with a diesel prado, or any diesel to service it regularly,
get undernath with a grease gun after any 4wding, check your fluids and tire preassures each and every time you re-fuel, repair any minor issues before the get worse and replace worn components before they break.
this will avoid alot of heatache and keep your vehice in top condition for many years to come.

                                Re: 5000k Servicing.

i recently traded my 2005 diesel prado on a new D4D, i serviced it every 5000kms and that was the very first thing the salesman looked at when he was doing the appraisal for the trade. you might save a few dollars in the short term but in the long term maybe you get less resale value.

                                Cheers Andrew
