From my earlier post

A while back, I got an error message on Scanguage and could not locate what the problem was. Mentioned the code to dealer but they said it meant nothing to them and their code was a different number.

Came across this site
http://www.scangauge.net/DTC/Toyota.html

It gives specific error codes for Toyota and purports to bear the Scanguage name.

Can you check if these error codes coincide with those at Toyota?

I had those codes but Toyota said they were not theirs.

Have you checked them out at all?

Hi Guys,
Just tried to align some of the P series of the OBDII codes from the scanguage website with those of the KDJ-120 D4D ECM and Toyota are correct their codes are different.

Does it really take a whole day to work out what's wrong with the engine?

Unfortunately sometimes it does. The old days of "chuck a set of points in the Kingswood and she'll be good for another 20000" are long gone.
With more and more electrical components and sensors on the modern engine, and more complex testing measures, these things can take a great deal of time, depending on the problem of course. They should have been able to connect IT2 to it though and give you a rough idea in about 5 minutes, depending on the workload at your dealership at the time.
Convoluted enough? Good luck, remember to be patient, and hopefully they will have you back in business before you know it!! :wink:

Reading this topic I thought I might buy a cheapie code reader from ebay.

Can anyone please tell em what type of OBD (1 or 2) I have, I can't find it anywhere in the manual.

OBD2 seems to be the go for the cheapish ones on EBay, however, I don't have a clue what I need for my Sept 2003 built diesel Prado?

Also, can anyone tell me where I would need to plug this into?

Any advice please?

Sorry Oldsalt, the 1kzte ECU is not OBD complient so none of the readers will work. You can check for fault codes by putting the ECU in diagnostic mode (jumper wire in the ECU plug and count the flashes of the ECU light on the dash).

You can also use the Toyota SST (special service tool) reader, however I imagine they cost half a house, if they would even sell them to anybody apart from a Toyota franchised workshop.

if an engine develops a fault which causes a warning/error/check light to illuminate. This will register in the computer and stay registered even if the fault corrects itself and causes the warning/error/check light to extinguish. This can then be downloaded at the next vehicle service by the service technician although you will be charged for this as this is not part of the normal service. You would be surprised at some of the data that can be downloaded. I'm not referring to just Toyota here. The data can make for an interesting read. I have rebuilt an engine after a deliberate over speed which was proved which data collected.
