  • Using alot of oil!

Today we checked the oil in the prado..... Lucky we did to as it was just getting to the low line, and the oil is black.
We have only just hit the 7000km mark so I cant understand why we are using so much oil and why it is black.

I am going to call Toyota tomorrow and see what they say but has anyone else had this problem so soon?

I just checked my oil based on your post. Still at full and looks okay. We've done about 5,500km so far.

BPC ~ will be interested to hear if you have a fault.

      Re: Using alot of oil!

Very interesting. All diesels I've owned up until now have turned the oil black fairly quickly. But then this is the first brand new diesel I've ever owned. The oil in this one goes darkish but I wouldn't say it goes "black". You've got the two raised dots at the end of the dipstick right? Full is up around the top most dot right? Also keep in mind that you really need to leave the engine sitting for quite a while for all the oil to drain back into the sump. If you did a reading in the morning and again an hour after you'd got back from a trip, the dipstick may very well read slightly lower. Dip it again next morning and you may well find the oil level has come up slightly. I'm not aware that brand new engines should use oil while they are being run in, although I'm willing to be corrected on that. Mine certainly doesn't seem to be using a scrap of oil which isn't something I'm used to..... Just about to click over 13,000 kms. Certainly if you're using oil to the extent that you're needing to top it up then I'd say back to MR Toyota, because I don't think it should be using oil to that extent.

        Re: Using alot of oil!

I just spoke to Toyota and they advised that the oil should be black as it is a diesel and diesel burns alot hotter.
As for the levels..... they said that within the first 10,000km it will use more oil while it is running in.

I am going to top it up tonight and check it again in 1000km and see if its dropped again.

          Re: Using alot of oil!

I was under the impression black oil from a diesel engine was a biproduct of the burning process, not a product of heat ??

          Anyway,

I go through a vehicle in about 10 months, don't stress to much BPC, it is pretty normal for a new engine to use a bit of oil in the first 10 000kms or so. After that they should be fairly consistant. If you break something major you will either get a puddle, or the exhaust will cover the back of the car in a fine mist, or it will get into the coolant.

If you do a lot of city low speed stop start driving the oil fills up with a bit of crap. If you then take you car on a long high speed or high rev drive where some of this crap can burn/evaporate off in the hotter oil temps the oil level will drop.

I think some engines just use oil. I have had a few that have run fine exept they liked to have a scooner to so over 10 000kms. Might just be variation in manufacture. I alway keep a small 1lt bottle in my bits just in case.

Just be careful you don't overfill it, as IP noted give it a couple of hours to resettle, the D4D seems to like to hold on to it for a while. From memory I think there is just under a litre from empty to full.

I have heard a few stories and opinions on servicing but on all my vehicles, I get an oil/filter change and grease at 1K, 5K and 10K after that depends on how bad the conditions are I drive in as to 5 or 10K intervals.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

            Re: Using alot of oil!

Dark oil is entirely normal for a diesel engine , less so for single rail engines . If your used to petrol engines it look dark even in the D4D this is a result of combustion byproducts . Similarly oil usage in new engines is normal ,varies considerably ,a byproduct of the cyclinder honing used to bed the rings in . For instance I notice my new company vehicle (Patrol with ZD30 )used about 1litre of oil in the first 5k , the previous one (Patrol 4.2 TD) used none at anytime during 200k .

Well that's interesting information guys. I never expected that brand new engines would use that much oil but I've learned something it seems. I can fully understand the rings needing time to bed in properly. I suppose each engine will be different in this regard as mine has used very little oil since new.

                Re: Using alot of oil!

I run synthetic oils in the Prado and they dont seem to get as black as the original 15w 40w Toyota oil i was using, they turn Darker but not black....... Im not too sure if there is a problem with changing oils too often???? ops: It runs nice though, , when first switching over, it used a bit (about the litre mark) in the first 10 - 15000Kms but now does not move in levels much except for cold to hot of course. I changed to Synthetic as I was doing about 1200km a week, so in to Mr Toyota for a 5 weekly service regular special, now its only every 10 - 11weeks the oil level does not move at all in this time.
