  • At last I can breath!!!!

    Hi There

After recently fitting a Safari Snorkel (for which Chippys thread was consulted many times. Thanks Chippy !!), I was less than impressed with the supposed better breathing characteristics of a Safari Snorkel over the std air intake set-up on my '06 1KZ-TE - no real improvement was noticed. Now I know that you don't fit a snorkel to get better performance but I still expected some improvement. I was a bit disappointed to say the least. As my truck was also due for a 45k service at the same time I asked Toyota to take extra care to clean the air filter, and they blew it out etc etc - a small improvement was noticed. Anyway, I decided to shell out $60 on a new air filter today, and me truck is now like a different beast! Heaps more throttle response, revs out harder, more apparent power - all of which is to be expected really. Anyway my point is that in NZ Toyota do not specify replacement for the air filter until 90k's, which leaves me wondering why? IMHO it should be done every main service. Its the best $60 bucks I've spent on my truck so far - apart from the Safari Snorkel, Arb portable air compressor, Bosch wipers, Nokia car kit........ The only trouble now is I can't really qualify what sort of improvement there has been in fitting the snorkel, apart from the looks. I may have just wasted $600 on a snorkel  Hang on, is there such a thing as wasting money on a snorkel?

Can't comment on economy but it's cheap compared to a hydro locked engine... and those dusty roads... well, it'll breath easier there too.

      Thanks Snaga

Theres no shortage of H2O in NZ so it'll come in handy at some point!!!

        I still expected some improvement
All 4x4's are different but in the case of the 1kz 120 Prado there's no way you could hope for power increase by fitting a snorkle.

The standard set up is fantastic for performance (if not engine protection) as it's a straight 3 inch pipe from the airbox into the gaurd.

By fitting a snorkle you add 5 foot of black plastic duct, plus 3x 90 degree bends and another 45 degree one to the intake system....where's the performace gain in adding intake restrictions?...

Ram effect doesn't start having any measurable effect on power until around the 400kmph mark and if anything the aero dynamic loss (which would start having an effect around the 80kmph mark) of the snorkel body right on the leading edge of the wind screen would cancel any gains anyway.

Forget any dreams of a performance gain and sleep soundly in the knowledge that your engine is protected from ingesting bucket loads of water.

Re: At last I can breath!!!!

The "ram air" effect is a marketing ploy.

But the snorkel is definitely going to help prevent engine damage from deep water crossings.

Just keep changing the paper filter regularly, but do NOT fit a K&N filter as they have no place in a 4x4 that gets used offroad.

The pipe from the guard into the air box may be 3" but the oval shaped hole at the other end definitely aint! Just looking at it you would have to say its probably somewhere around half the cross sectional area of a 3" dia pipe, maybe a bit more, so its only ever going to flow as much air as the smaller hole will allow. The snorkel, while longer and having more bends, is way bigger in diameter throughout its entire length than the std. air duct, so you would have to assume that it would flow more air than the std intake set up. Whether this adds up to performance gains or not is hard to tell, but that's not the reason I fitted it. I fitted the snorkel for peace of mind. I'm happy.

Thanks... I guess you just saved me some $$$... Do not intend to be crossing any creeks or deep water.. Thus the cost out weighs any real or perceived gain for ME; at this point in time.. But if I get to go bush and off road for some time, it may be a worthwhile investment.
