  • Engine Lifespan 1KZTE

Hey guys anyone know the approx lifespan on the 1kzte i understand many variables will come into play however she has just ticked over 100k with no problems and i have a decision to make throw some mods on and stick with the opld girl and be debt free for a couple of years or back into debt for a new one only mods required are new shocks old ones leaking so i thought i may as well do the whole kit and a new ARB bar

I do only service every 10k however i use a fully synthetic oil and it mainly spends its life just going to work and back.

I am hoping to get another 100k out of her are my expectations relistic
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

    Chester,

I've seen a couple now with 300k kms on them and 90 series with 378k on it. If looked after it is a solid engine with a good life span. 100k is barely run in!

In regards to your extended service interval, I would consider getting an oil sample analysed for soot load. It only costs around $35-$45.
You may be better off using a good mineral oil and returning to the 5k service interval and be no worse off in dollar terms.

In general if doing stop start city driving or towing the service interval should not be extended. Long haul driving may see the soot levels down to a point that you can extend the interval. Obviously every circumstance is different hence getting an oil sample analysed would be cheap insurance.

I have seen a few crack the cyl head internally, requiring new cyl head fitment, but it is a bit of a rarity given the volume of these on the road. It happened to my mate's KZJ95. Cracked under the precomp chamber and had to have a new head fitted. He wasn't too pleased as he had only had the car for a little while, he doesn't have a lot of luck with cars though.

Chester is correct , mineral or semi synthetic would be the most suitable . If the Toyota thought that a full synthetic would increase the service period they would already be doing it .
I change mine (1kzte) every 5k with a new filter and would expect a minimum service life of 500-600 km , that is what we get out of our fleet at work for those that do high Km through the lease and thats how they are serviced ,only the single point injected engines are at 10 k .
PS I also have two seventies cars (both petrol) one with a four (500,000 km) and the other a six (420,000 km) both serviced this way from new and they still run fine with good compression and oil pressure .

Just sold my TD 2000 mod with 220,000ks on the clock. I have done everything from interstate driving to around town and then flogging the crap out of it at the Blue Mountains, Landcruiser Mountain Park with not a problem. I serviced mine every 5000ks and it was still running beautifully. I do miss the girl though.

A mate has a 99 Hilux with the 1KZTE in it.

Last I heard, it had 470K on it and still going very strong. Gearbox has been replaced, engine is original though. He bought it off his dad, who had it from new. Always done mostly highway work only though.

                Guys,

My May '05 Prado has 232,000 on the clock. Only had minor problems, cracked sump when I got air-borne on Fraser and a diode pack failed on the alternator. I get it serviced every 10,000 km.

Mate of mine has a 2000 Prado with over 500,000 km. It gets serviced every 10,000 as well.

                    Hi there,

I'm taking up on a rather old thread but what do you guys do about the 'back compression' & the oil mist around the head gaskit? Is that a sign that the engine is going weak?

I run my 90 series on a daily basis to office and back. Its done 154,000kms & at smokes a bit on high revs (we have a higher sulphur content in our diesel here in Pakistan) so that's a reason for it to smoke even more than the usual.

On cold starts, sometimes I get greyish smoke out the exhaust. Apart from that the engine noise, its pickup & running are all fine.

I change the oil at 3000kms or 3 months, which ever comes 1st (the later usually)

My 2000 GXL has 320000 km on it now.
                      I brought it @ 299000 with a cracked head.
Got it cheap enough to do repairs and still be in front.
I put on a complete AMC head and it still uses no oil and hasnt missed a beat.
Seems to be about the only problem they have.

                        Hi collegues,
I had my 1 KZ TE gearbox atf mixed with coolant after the fluid cooler in the radiator got perforated. I noticed so after driving for about 2km and then started a gearbox fluid flashing task there after I drove about 500km. Is there going to be any future demage to gearbox? Secondly, can any one please tell the weight of such an engine?
