  • No power - warning light on

Similar to a previous post (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4772) but a different symptom - so I thought I would put this in a new post.

Went to use the car this morning for the first time in over 24 hours. Started OK but no power when reversing down the drive. Tried 'drive' and again - even with foot to floor, only did say 10kms/hr. I did notice that the 'engine warning light' was showing.

The manual says ' Take vehicle to Toyota dealer'. I couldn't drive it there - it would take me an hour to do the 10 kms - and obviously something’s wrong.

Went through a bit of water a week ago but I have driven it every day since (apart from yesterday).

Seems like I will need a tow to get it to a repair shop! Only good thing is that it's only done 30000kms so hopefully under warrantee - unless I've stuffed something in last weeks water.

    Any ideas?

    Is it revving?

May be worth (if your a member) calling the road service to have a quick snoop, they might be able to shed some light on it.

Fly by wire thottle issue maybe?... wild guess really, without seeing the car it's impossible to trouble shoot.

Well - called the RAC today. He had no idea. Well at least I've got a voucher to get a tow to the repair shop. Hopefully they are open on Monday....

I'll let you all know what went wrong when I find out.

            Update…
Well I got my baby back yesterday – after being towed (on a flat bed) to Toyota on Tuesday.

I’ve got a brand new turbo unit – fortunately under warrantee (the car is 14 months old).

I spoke to the service person (not the mechanic) and he indicated there was a sticking actuator in the turbo. Apparently quite a small part – but they replaced the whole turbo unit. He indicated a cost to them of about $3500 and a retail value of $5000  . He did mutter something about in an emergency perhaps jamming it open so the car could be drive – but I would have no idea how to do this. I don’t think he was really much of an expert.

I wonder if someone else was to repair – the part would have been fixed. Perhaps the dealers are better to claim on Toyota for the whole thing – and keep any surplus parts.

Well just in case you are faced with the same problem – hopefully it isn’t the same fault. Unless you’re covered by warrantee.

Re: No power - warning light on

Good news it is all sorted out.
I notice from a recent Toyota press release that some major parts are being reconditioned and sold at a much reduced price but still with a 12 month warranty.
This is fine if your vehicle is out of warranty and you make the decision to purchase new or reconditioned but it occurred to me that Toyota could (and probably do) also use these reconditioned parts to fit to any warranty repairs.
If you have a large balance left on the warranty period then I guess it's not too much of a concern but should you only have a couple of months remaining and the same component failed after expiry of the warranty then I bet there will be some meaningful dialogue between the dealer and customer as to who pays.

Re: No power - warning light on

I was told by one dealership that they send the turbos away to be repaired then refit it when they get it back, my car may have to go through this on monday. They did say that it could be more than 5 days off the road at this time of year.

Re: No power - warning light on

Sounds like the boost wastegate actuator was faulty

I don't think it has a wastegate, not one like you and I are used to anyway, (pneumatic ram)... I think boost is controlled by changing vane angles. Maybe the "actuator" is part of part of the varible vane set up.

Ok.. no wastegate in the traditional sense, instead it uses a variable vane and nozzle on the exhaust side to control gas flow into the compressor wheel...

I have a pdf file explaining in more detail how it works including diagrams. PM me if you want to learn more.... (you know how it is..Copyright laws  )

Re: No power - warning light on

Interesting read. After arriving home last Thursday night ... all fine ... my Prado had the same issue Friday morning. It wouldn't rev much over 1200 rpm and wasn't going anywhere  The engine management light was on and there was a bit of a whistle from the engine. After the weekend I had it flat topped to the dealer and they have been puzzling over it ever since and trying different parts off another Prado. Toyota was advising but it took sometime to make the final decision. This evening they told me they have ordered a new turbo which should arrive in another couple of days.
While the guys at the dealership have been very helpful and maybe this issue isn't a common one, it would be a real problem if it happenned in the middle of nowhere.
