  • Engine Noise in 2008 prado GXL

    Hi All

Hope you had a great Xmas and New Year.

I have a noise in my engine that I hope someone can identify. I noticed it after the 10,000km service a few weeks ago. Probably the best way to describe it would be a whining noise on acceleration. I can hear the tubo whistling but this is distinct noise. I haven't noticed any loss of power. My fist thought might be a bearing or belts but I am not sure.

I thought it might have been a wind noise like the type if you have a rack on but it is definitely inside the engine.

I obviously will be dropping past the toyota joint next week.

    Thanks for your opinions

Noise from the EGR - maybe a faulty gasket?

Well I called past the toyota service today and one of the Techs came for a drive.....they could not hear any issues (although i could hear it)

Funny though how you know your own and i know it wasn't there before the 10,000km service! Oh well, it doesn't appear to be causing any performance issues so will monitor it.

The only other theory has come from my missus and that is i am stupid....and she is always right!!

It only becomes a problem when you start hearing voices telling you to do things!

Do you get the noise when you pull it back through the gears to slow down? I have a whine, but I think it's the counter balance shaft, which gives of a bit of a whine which is normal.

Re: Engine Noise in 2008 prado GXL

My Dad used to have a particularly good strategy for engine noises. First he would turn the radio down and listen for a while. :? Then he'd wind down the window and listen a bit more. :? :? After a while, I guess when he got used to the noise, he'd wind up the window and turn the radio up a bit louder until he couldn't hear the noise anymore. Worked really well with old Holdens.

Seriously though, these things can be really frustrating so I hope you find the cause.

Re: Engine Noise in 2008 prado GXL

                  I presume this is a D4D not the V6??

From what you describe, I have the exact same noise, from standstill, kind of sounds like a belt slipping, or a bearing whirring. Mine started at about 1100km, got home from a decent 350km drive (towing too), went to the shops and noticed this noise.

Mine also has a rythmic squeak in it. When out in the bush it almost sounded like a bird cheeping, but its definitely from the engine. On the 1000km check, toyota were informed, but couldn't hear it, but they told me they lubricated the belts.

Anyway, I was going to wait and see what happened with both these noises, if they get worse, back it goes, otherwise its probably just the noise it makes.
