    I have a 04 TD 3L Prado and soon after buying it I changed the coolant Before doing so I never had any problems with overheating. I took the car to Sydney with a large trailer and on the way home I noticed the temp up very high. When I pulled over I found all the water had gone from the radiator and under further investigation I found the rear welsh plug had come out of the head. I'm thinking that it was because the cooling system had an air lock and caused steam build up in the rear of the head blowing the welsh plug out. So I got it towed home and removed engine to replace new welsh plug and new coolant. This time made sure I had no air lock. My question is I notice my temp sits on quarter around town and normal driving and when on freeway going up hills under load or towing my boat it rises to just under half under acceleration then comes down to quarter when off acceleration and on flat road. Has anyone else had this problem and one last thing, if you change your coolant be very careful to make sure you have no airlock as I'm guessing this is why the plug blew out.

    Bugger of a first post .... pretty lucky you caught it in time.
    Sorry ... I've never seen my temp gauge move beyond norm .... so I can't be of any help.

    BTW ... I've just edited the text of your post to remove the UPPERCASE ... its considered shouting and poor form.

      the common thing to look for when the temp rises under these conditions, is;

      thermostat needs replacing (i would try this first as they are cheap - and use genuine thermostat, and use new o-ring),
      radiator - dirty/blocked portions internally,
      waterpump - corosion on fins or fins corroded not allowing full flow/pressure flow.

      i would do in this order.

      1 big note.
      flush your coolant 'completely' out,
      or risk a possible blockage in radiator.
      use genuine toyota coolant.
      if you mixed and don't flush properly,
      a blockage will occur.
      the chemicals used in the coolants will react if you don't use an the same brand.
      it's cheaper and easier to just still with the original. no overheating issues
