  • DPChip and Vortex Exhaust on 120 D4D?

    Hi Folks,

has anyone got a DP Chip and Vortex (TaipanXP) system running on a new D4D Prado as yet?

The guys doing my aftermarket work want me to go Safari and Beaudesert Exhaust, however having spoken to Kerry at TaipanXP, he is getting immense results from his D4D Hilux, running the DP Chip and a 3" system.

The Taipan system has a cat (so it meets Euro4 standards), which I don't believe the Beaudesert one does...

The DP Chip holds some appeal due to it being adjustable...

I'm new to turbo diesels, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

This isn't your dyno chart is it?

Can you give us the good oil on your setup, and how the dyno run was done? What gear, etc?

      Cheers,

Almost any decent diesel tuning module (none of the above are actually chip replacments like in earlier Falcon or Commodore) and exhaust will make a significant improvement in performance. Almost all of the diesel tuning modules on the market are adjustable - even the one installed on mine about 4 years ago.

An improved exhaust system will assist any turbo engine (petrol or diesel). Add the diesel tuning module and the combination will be greater than the sum of the individual component power increases.

The question is do you NEED a cat?? Its extra weight, extra heat retained after the turbo to work properly, and extra maintance item (damage), PLUS extra cost.

Some companys push the envolope for the highest power reading. Keep in mind that every engine is different is small ways that effect power and economy. Yours may be at the other end of the scale. Would you rather sacrifce power for durability?

          Summary
          a. Almost any diesel tuning module sold in Australia for the 1KD (and even the 1KZ) engine will be adjustable - thats not a difference
          b. exhaust system must be mandrel bent
          c. too large exhaust will cause droning without extra mufflers (weight and cost)
          d. minimal practical on road returns for exhaust larger than 2¾" under most conditions of use - larger is extra cost
          e. if you are after MAX power ensure you have a means of monitoring Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT), lest you fry your turbo. This needs to be something that will alert promptly you when the situation arises.

Other 'chips' are Stienbauer, Speedbuster, ENG-TEK and dragon, plus tuneit from switzerland (, germany, australia and GB x2

Actually manufacturers avoid e. by detuning the engine at max power - all the diesel tuning module does is what the factory could have done, but chose not to do.

I have EGT gauge like this. Audible alarm sure wakes you up when you exceed the safe working temps!

            DP Chip

            Hi Dave0
Is the benefit of installing a DP Chip without exhaust changes worth it or do you need to change the exhaust as well? I have a TD 3.0 2004 model. Thanks for your opinion.

Initially I just changed the rest of the exhaust system. That Helped - made it faster with rolling 40kmh to 100kmh 4th gear acceleration than an auto (that did kick down and pull away until about 70kmh - but we overtook them quickly then). Turbo spooled up quicker.

Later I fitted the ENG-TEK Diesel Tuning Module. That helped some more.

Finally I did the exhaust system properly (ie as it should have been done in the first place with a free flowing dump pipe). This further helped the turbo spool up quicker.
The standard exhaust is very restrictive in the dump pipe area - Factory cast dump housing will JUST pass a matchbox. This slows spool up (generating boost).

In a steady state load (as in dyno or long steep hill like Cunninghams Gap or coming out of Adelaide) there is very little static power gain from an exhaust system alone - as with diesel engines the power is basically generated from the burning the fuel.

To burn more fuel you need more air, and the additional fuel in the correct quantities. A good exhaust system (and induction system mods) help get the air into and out of the motor. The Diesel Tuning Module provides the appropriate fuelling conditions. Looks like they are on Xmas special.

This is all without altering the boost.

Personally I would go with the Diesel Tuning Module (cause it is the single largest power improvement), the the complete mandrel bend exhaust system. Diesel Tuning Module is about 30mins work to fit - quick and easy.

I was tossing up between tiapan and beauy exhaust, but if the taipan has a cat on it then i will be going the other way as all our Nissans at the dealership that have a cat on a diesel need to run a full synthetic oil at $20 per liter. 6.5 x $20 every service.....

I was under the assumption that diesels didn't have at catalytic converter.
I thought that was just an unleaded thing to kill the nasties that replaced the lead.?
Can someone clarify this for me??

News to me. I knew diesels were coming out with particle filters (stop the soot) but not cats. Just when I thought I knew everything!

Here's a little overview of how modern common rails diesels work (scoll down for the section on cats)

Well there you go. Thanks Mick! So D4D's from the factory don't have cats do they? If not, how do the aftermarket makers get the cat to last if the electronics aren't there to monitor its performance?
