diesel engine oil specs / compatibility

toyota recommend a DLD1 standard for oil in a 1KD (D4D) engine. I was using valvoline super diesel rated at DLD 1, now I want to use Penrite 5 diesel (fully synthetic), which is rated at DLD 2/3.

Does anyone know if DLD 2 or DLD3 oils are compatable for a DLD 1 engine? should I use only a DLD 1 oil?

To confuse the issue, I found an oil which was rated at DLD1 / DLD3, but not DLD2. I would have thought if DLD3 is the highest standard for a diesel engine oil, then it should be "back compatable" with DLD2.

Anyone got a simple explanation?

Here is a PDF explaining the DLD grading system. The oils are backwards compatable.
