  • Diesel injector life 1KZ ?

    Hi guy's great site for loads of info. We are thinking of buying our lease vehicle (04 gxl 3l td auto ) and having just clocked 280 k I was thinking of getting the injectors replaced / serviced? Any one have an idea on life of these injectors. Has started to rattle on cold mornings for about 10 sec, then fine. Cold is -5 or so.

    The main signs of worn injectors include poor fuel economy and black smoke.

    Diesel injectors do wear out and unlike petrol injectors, they often need to have the nozzles replaced, not just cleaned. This is due to the high pressure and the way the fuel is forced through the injection port.

    Under normal circumstances the nozzles will last well over 100,000km's before needing to be attention. Obviously this distance can differ depending on the type of injector, fuel contaminants and the style of driving during that period.

    At 280k I'd be giving the old girl a new set! if they have never been touched I'd say they are well and truly past their best!

    They are not that expensive in the scheme of things and you can get them on exchange if you want to do the job yourself.

    Has started to rattle on cold mornings for about 10 sec, then fine. Cold is -5 or so.
    Could be injectors but more likely glow plugs, especially if accompanied by hard starting

      I have done 197tkm and got injectors checked today (the head was cracked and now itīs good time to check those at the same time). The opening pressure was between 133-138 bar than it should be 148-156 bar (new) and 143-151 bar (used). So I need new nozzles and adjustment for them. The old diesel guru said that itīs not good thing just adjust the pressure, the nozzles should always change when injectors are opened.

        Thanks MickL, just as I thought. Starts not a problem, first or second revolution, just has a diesel rattle for the first 10 seconds or so. have been quoted $257.92 each for new ones by the local toyota dealer. Sounds good to me as the last set of injectors I played with were in a 2H at $145 each to do up. Any thing else I should be doing? as there is an amount of money in the kitty and would rather use i than after tax dollars. Again thanks

          That's quite expensive... you should be able to get remanufactured ones for about $100 each.

              Why to change whole injector? There are practically no other what wear than the nozzle. New nozzles not cost much.

                Couple of reasons it's best to exchange them for whole units, first is the cost difference is minimal if you get remanufactured injectors on exchange (they take your old ones)

                Another is you can't pressure test them without specialist equipment, You can't check the spray patterns either, both of which should be checked after a rebuild to confirm no damage or contamination during assembly.

                Also the internal parts are made to very close tolerances (microns of clearance) so you can't touch the mating surfaces with your fingers or allow any form of contamination with foreign matter. They are best reconditioned in a clean room.

                Drop any internal part and consider it damaged.

                While you can split them with conventional tools you risk damage and it's best to use special service tool (sst) 09268-64010.

                Exchange, remanufactured injectors come with a warranty

                  Iīll get my injectors rebuild in local diesel specialist with new oem nozzles with guarantee 200€ (170 AUD)/whole set ready for install. He said the injectors are like new after that. I donīt see any reason to go new or remanufactured ones.

                    Iīll get my injectors rebuild in local diesel specialist with new oem nozzles with guarantee 200€ (170 AUD)/whole set ready for install. He said the injectors are like new after that. I donīt see any reason to go new or remanufactured ones
                    Rebuilt and remanufacrured is the same thing.... if you do them on exchange you give them your old ones and get a set of rebuild/remanufactured ones... put them in yourself, easy DIY, no special tools and Prado only off the road an hour.


                    And you had better check your exchange rate ... 200€ is around $345.

                        Seems we were virtually talking about the same thing... I mis understood your earlier post in that you should change the nozzles yourself at home, hence my reply about getting exchange units.
