I had a UniFliter in my old Disco TDi - looked very similar to the Prado one shown above. Made a big difference to the underpowered old bus.
I did have one "oops" with it however.
After cleaning and re-oiling it it one day, I inadvertently ( stupidly ops: ) assembled the filter elements incorrectly. I had the mesh bit on the top ( snorkel side ) and the foam bits underneath. Pretty obvious mistake, but i must have been in a hurry or something.
So about 200km later I was barrelling down the highway and suddenly lost all power, thick smoke coming out the exhaust - I thought I'd blown the motor.
Removed the air filter and noticed the sponges missing - wtf - took off the turbo hoses and found that the sponge had sucked in to the hose and totally blocked it - luckily it did not reach the turbo vanes otherwise it probably would be a disaster. I soon had it assembled correctly and was on my way.
Now thats something that you would only do once!!
You will find that all Enduro and motox bikes use oiled foam air filters as paper elements just arent practicle for very dusty conditions and would be an expensive exersise when sometimes in extreem conditions filters can be totaly loaded with dirt after 80-100km in competative events. I race in the S.A. reliability Trial series and use Twin air elements on my race bike (Honda CRF250X) . I change the filters very regularly and clean and reoil them as required. These bikes are running at speeds of 11000 rpm + in bulldust conditions. I can only say that after reading the posts on this topic I will certainly look at getting the unifilter air filter
Hey Mitch,Thanks again for giving us other fellow PPrs another great idea..I too have just upgraded the old girl with the unifilter but have also kept the paper filter as an emergency option.I have previously had these filters on other cars.My old vt wagon still had one installed when i sold it to my sister. Her ex boyfriend recently serviced the car and in his great wisdom decided that the filter needed to be replaced so threw out the king dragon filter and installa ryco paper :!: ...go figure. His response was that the paper would be better for power-he seems a few kangaroos short of a paddock. Cant tell the youth these days
