G'day
Is there an easy way to remove the oil filter as it seems to be buried way down there ?
Cheers
Ross
Hi Ross,
The 3l D4D is a breeze to remove compared to some others,
1. The toyota oil filter D4D Oil Filter P/N: 90915-YZZD2
2.OIL FILTER REMOVAL TOOL: PART NO. 09228-07501 or you can get a universal filter removal tool suitable for a socket set extension bar from Supercheap or REPCO make sure it suits the oil filter
3. Get yourself and long 1/2" or 3/8" drive extension bar 300mm + or make up a suitable length from your socket set bits and pieces;
4. Set up your oil drain container under the sump plug I normally drain the sump pan oil first, get yourself a small set of steps or 20L drum to stand on so you can reach filter by hand and a guard protection cloth;
5. Fit the filter removal tool and socket bar/ ratchet to the filter and back the oil filter off about 1 turn;
6. Dirty Oil will drain from the filter to the oil catch all and will drain via an "as fitted" plastic tube alongside the sump into your oil drain container;
7. Allow the filter to drain for a few minutes, it is easy to observe when the oil is finished draining down the small drainhole located at about 6 O'Clock;
8. Unscrew the old oil filter by hand, prepare the new filter and fit as per packet instructions;
9. When the new filter is installed and tested for leaks, I squirt a small quantity of degreaser around the filter assembly and allow it to drain down the drain tube into the dirty oil container, when I get the truck outside I then hose off the oil filter housing assembly.

I bought the Toyota Oil Filter tool about 6 months ago in Melbourne direct from the Toyota Spare Parts counter and was charged $34.58
I'm not in the trade and also pay GST.
I thought it was a reasonable price for the genuine article.

I also bought the Toyota oil filter tool (Southside Toyota Brisbane, quote the part number as they won't know what you are talking about, 2 days from warehouse) for $34. It's absolutely the best way to go. I tried a supercheap socket type tool that "grips tighter as you loosen" but you can't use it to tighten a new filter. Obviously you don't need to tighten much but you just can't get hands on to do it. I use 2x30cm extensions and stand on a milk crate as it is.
Get the Toyota part, as others have said on the forum before, and keep your sanity.
