    Re: 1kz chip facts

    Whilst 180km/h interesting...even 160! I've really got no where i could test that....legally.....

    It sure sounds nice though.....

Even being able to accelerate to 110km/h in a car that could continue onto 180 would be a nice feeling too I'm sure. :P

Does anyone know if I can get a 3 inch or 2.5 inch exhaust system & a dpchip & a dyno adjust in a one-stop shop? Wagga Albury Canberra Melbourne Sydney perhaps?

    Thanks

      Re: 1kz chip facts

Hey guys, I'm sort of going to take this thread off slightly but related to chips. I'm real keen to chip my 2006 1KZ and I'm considering the DP Chip.

First of how is this installed? Is this a plug and play that takes maybe 5-10 minutes or is this the model that requires soldering into the ECU and the fuel pump? I know the 1KZ uses the DP34 but not sure on the installation method.

Secondly there is ChipIt in Perth who also have (nearly ready for retail) to suit the 1KZ. They do have a chip to suit the D4D and I was curious to see if anyone has one or looked at these. There isn't a huge amount of info and when I contanted them they told mne about the new chip in about 3 months but also tried to sell me petrol injection for a diesel. I guess I wanted to get a comparison between ChipIt and DP Chip. ChipIt will probably be around $800 while DP is about $1450. $650 goes a long way.

Spoke to the Other Half about it the other day and didn't get the usual NO. In fact the Other Half listened so now I just need to annoy the shit out of her until I buy the thing

        Hi Nick

I emailed Chip it the other day to enquire about their chip as I had read on their web site that they would supply their chip for the older non-common rail diesels with a boost controller. They confirmed that their chip soon to be released will be programed to defeat the factory boost limit and come supplied with a boost controller. This should be good news as the chip can be programmed to inject more fuel to suit higher boost pressures, and you are not limited to 14.5psi of boost if the chip is able to stop the "limp home mode" experienced when overboost occurs.

          Re: 1kz chip facts

Had some info back from Chip IT and they, like DP Chip, offer the 30 day money back and 5 year warranty. They fitting is also just two plugs so no soldering. I had read somewhere about the DP Chip being soldered in but wasn't sure if that was the 1KZ (96kw) of the 1KD (125kw). The soldering was into the ECU and Fuel pump I believe.

I also mistakenly made a comment that Chip It are in Perth. I believe they are at Mortlake NSW down near the Paramatta.

Yes the DPChip on the 1kz is soldered in - also it requires a wire from the throttle position sensor as this is how the chip determines the load requested by the driver....

This also means that the DP Chip will not add any benefit with the cruise control on since the throttle position is 0 as far as the chip is concerned. (You could put your foot on the accelerator if you wanted however to help it )

It will be interesting to see the final price comparison....I've had a look at the web site, they present very well.

              Cheers

There is no factory boost limit as such on the 1kz. It's just that the boost sensor is only able to measure 0-1 bar (0-14.7psi) boost pressure. Once over this the ECU logs a fault as a sensor fault (out of range).
Another thing of note is that the CT20 turbo used on the 1kz (and many other Toyota engines) is quite small and starts to become inefficient at higher boost levels, it also becomes very unreliable and is well known to start self destructing at pressures over 16psi sending pieces of impeller through the intake.

I think 1 bar is pretty big help already.

I would talk to these guys http://www.berrimadiesel.com.au.
They do the dp chip, but thats not all they do. Well worth getting your car looked at by them.
Mate had his 4.2 Patrol there, well worth the trip.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. just out of interest, seems like a lot of you guys have put a chip in place, some of you wound up the boost but has anyone actually put their car on the dyno to see what A/F ratios they are getting?

wounding up the boost without dyno tuning sounds to me a lot like russian roulette. I know the chip will give you more fuel but you dont want the engine to go PING PING BOOM

A/F ratios aren`t that relevant in Diesels as the engine is more or less an airpump with more diesel creating more power and more heat. Less fuel, less heat.
Obviously there is a point at which you can put too much diesel in there, but it will properly smoke first before reaching the correct A/F ratio.

The standard diesel engine is set up pretty conservatively, there is scope to tune an engine to produce more power by injecting the right amount of diesel at the right time, but obviously stuff like injectors and the cooling system need to be addressed as well.

Petrols ping (detonation).... with diesels it's all about EGTs (exhaust gas temperatures).

Wind up the boost too far on a turbo/petrol engine and you run lean and cause pre-detonation which is a big piston/rod killer.

Wind up the boost too far on a diesel and you actually lower EGTs (high EGTs being bad) but you have a really inefficient turbo. Diesels run excess air, it's the rate of fuel you tip in that makes the power.

so what you're saying, if one was to wind up the boost on a diesel engine (by whatever means...boost solenoid or even a t-piece off the actuator) the factory ECU would recognise the extra air coming in and thus compensate this by allowing more fuel in and by that making more power?
