Bloody hell Phil, I recon 15 litres per 100 ks wasn't a bad effort considering you were towing bloody near half a house & at 140kph.
I am guessing you had a good time away by consuming a good part of you load was  8)
    Cheers

      Cheers Phil,

It sounds like we have very similar reasons for opting the manual. I also dont like the auto's for steep decents, even with decent low range, the 4spd auto was geared too tall in 1st for my liking , not to mention being petrol, wouldnt offer the same level of engine braking of a diesel. I still love the car, but am looking forward to the new D4D in manual guise.

I think this is a great forum from what I've seen so far. I see there are quite a few others with manual D4D's here. I'm going to take a look around and see what people have to say.

Thanks for the info and I look forward to sharing my experiences with everyone here in time. The boat arrives tommorow...then 2 weeks...so they tell me.

      Cheers

I just fuelled up the first time since my initial fill. There was a combination of about 950km of town running and 500km of open road towing a reasonably heavy trailer. Consumption overall was 9.8 l/100km which, given the newness of the engine is quite outstanding. I am expecting it to improve further. The open road performance was so much better than my old 95 series diesel.

            Hughd,
Good feed back, & aren't the D4D's awesome regards pulling power & economy.
All we need now is realistic price of Diesel fuel!
If you get a chance, tell us more of your trip.

You are right it is impressive. Great performance and fuel economy along with comfort and respectable off road ability. What more could one want?

                Fazza,
From Sydney, we went to Coolah Tops, Warrumbungles, Miles, Isla Gorge (instead of Expedition NP - road a quagmire after a heavy rainfall, and also missed Nuga Nuga NP - no water in the lake), Carnarvon Gorge, Salvator Rosa, Longreach, Wellford NP, Bindegolly NP, Carrawinya NP, Dubbo.
Great trip with so many highlights - pity we missed Expedition though.

                  Hughd,

Sounds like you had a great trip, the heavy (well needed) rain probably gave it a different perspective.

How good is the fuel consumption, with those figures you would have only needed about 3 tank fulls.

If you get a chance pictures would be nice & probably posted under the Trip Report or Favorite Destination sites?

                  Cheers,

I have had my manual D4D for about 4 months now and done about 8000km's with a couple of trips between Sydney and Brisbane (lightly loaded). I am getting about 9.7 LPH on the highway and about 8.5 around town. It sounds strange getting better economy around town but I have found that once the speed goes above about 80kph the fuel economy suffers significantly. Try to keep the revs below about 2k and the economy is fantastic.

I am getting these figures using the Scanguage II and verifying them with odometer and fillup figures. (Scanguage is remarkably accurate when calibrated).

With Bullbar, lift kit, big tyres, roof rack, dual batteries all working against fuel efficiency I constintantly get 11L/100km.
The biggest thing I have noticed is how little this changes regardless of hard or easy it is driven, hwy, city or 4WDing the fuel consumption is always very close to 11L/100km.
In previous vehicles I noticed huge increases in fuel useage when off roading.

Well, I think the orange light will come on tommorow, for the first time. I've racked up about 1400km to get there. only about 400km of highway and 1000km around town, with some load, Cooper ATR's, Bar, Lights, Rack... I'm expecting to put in close to 160 ltrs to fill the tanks again. That should equate to around 11.4 ltrs/100km.

This is pretty good when I compare it to the Petrol Auto I had. The same driving would have seen me using over 15ltrs/100km at least. As this is my first diesel, I'm still adjusting my driving style and expect things to only improve. I'm hoping to get into the low to sub 10's, but still very happy with the consumption.
With my petrol, I almost always (as long as it was available) used 98 octane, so the price per litre for Premium was usually more expensive than diesel. I think I can get almost the same range out of 2 tanks of diesel as would take close to 3 in my petrol !!! This D4D will save me a fortune in fuel.

                        Cheers

11.4 or there abouts.. about 35% hwy, rest in town. no towing. hope to see this improve. 11.4 is still good, but not as good as others seem to be getting.

I did the figures today covering my first 5000km.

                              Combined city (20%) / Country (80%) is around 9.8-10 L/100km.

Country only driving on the open road is 9.2 L/100km.

Average overall so far is 9.8 L/100km.

I just had the free 5000km service and it seems like they've adjusted the engine as it feels like it's running smoother.

I'll see how the next reading is.
