Had the exact same issue occur to me 3/4 of the way to Canberra from Sydney. Engine light went on, car seemed to be in limp mode (the turbo wasnt working). Stopped on the side of the road, turned the car off, turned it back on and it was back to normal, however, the engine light was still on. Took it back to Toyota who mentioned that it was a clogged wastegate and that if it happened again they would replace the turbo.

No mods to exhaust or engine ECU.

Just had mine for 20,000 (30,000) serivce...nothing said about the exhaust being modified. Does not get driven enought for the 20,000 serivce... :shock: Well the wife took it in.

Update on my hiace guys.

Mine had died again.
Same thing.
All power dropped and this time I waited for 30 minutes and started up and fine.
Check engine light stayed on for about 3 hours then off by itself.

Went back to Toyota today and they went over it again and they have ordered a new turbo and it will be installed soon.
The van is out of warranty by a few weeks now but as I had the 1st problem within warranty they are doing all for free as I would expect.
My mates van has done exactly the same a month ago.
The dealer said they will clear the codes and reset a few times yet and see what happens....
My mate asked what will happen if gets out of warranty?
Dealer said will cross that bridge when it comes..... :roll:

Yes I know the error code off by heart now lol

P1251- stepper motor for turbo -intermittent.
This is on a Hiace of course so not sure if same code for Prados etc.

When you said toyota fixed it without replacing the turbo, all they do is let it rest for 30 minutes and delete the fault code as it rights itself.
They wouldn't have done anything I am assuming.

They have to replace the whole turbo as it's all intergrated.
Stepper motor or I would call it boost controller is inbuilt in the turbo so have to do the works.

Hoping a final update on this guys!
Had the turbo replaced yesterday.
As I dropped it off, there was another guy picking his hiace up after getting his turbo replaced!
His is a 2008 model, mine is a 2007.
They did 1 the week before also..
My mates who has the same problem is a 2008.

Toyota tells me the turbo has been revised after the problems so this is the newer version and "should" be fine from now on...
