  • So I bought and fitted a CCT Stage 1 turbo

TLDR; For 1/3rd the price of genuine the cct stage 1 replacement turbo for the 1KD seems to be a good little unit.

Firstly let me start by saying this. I know genuine would be best. If you can do it, get it.
But if you're like me and the home Finance Officer says no to a $3.5k turbo, then you are gonna have to go with something else.
I chose this one. Maybe it was a good choice, maybe not, time will tell.

    Old Turbo:
As you can see from the photos, the old turbo was not in good shape. Something must have gotten in there and knackered it. That being said, it was still going amazingly well, perhaps even better than before the noise started (this may be due to over boosting, not sure)

    Pre-install:
    1. The service was great. Prompt delivery.
    2. The compressor wheel had no play at all when it was installed and after a quick oil up (we didn't use the supplied oil, but used the oil that went into the car on the oil change) it spun freely and easily with a finger spin.
    3. The unit had no dust, contamination in the packaging.
    4. The DC motor seems a little larger than the genuine one.
    5. The bolts were all marked to show they hadn't shifted or loosened in transit.

    Install:
    1. Being a bolt-on replacement meant the install went smoothly.
    2. No dyno was done before or after, so I don't have the power figures

    Post-install:
    1. Removing one of the injector leads and starting the motor to crank it over (but not start) to get oil going through the system. There were no leaks.

    First test drive:
    1. The turbo spools up quite a bit quicker than genuine (assume this is due to the compressor wheel being lighter, billet vs cast).
    2. The power delivery is much more linear than genuine
    3. Whereas the genuine turbo boosts fairly well throughout the rev range, this one has flat spots where it plateaus.
    4. Boost mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) measured the same as genuine.
    5. The turbo boosts well to about 2.4k revs, but then it plateaus from the to +- 3.2k, then there is another little boost from there to 3.6k.
    6. 1.1k revs to 2.4k revs seems to be a sweet spot.

    Overall impression:
    Again, yes genuine is best.
But during the 5 1/2 hr drive home, the whole system had a good long time to settle in. During this, I noticed 3 things:
    1. As the drive went on the feel of the car and power delivery seemed to improve and the car easily accelerated to and held cruising speeds. Overtaking became easier as well.
    2. The turbo developed a nice note and even has a little overboost whistle which is cool
    3. The auto-shifting difference was interesting. With the old turbo (and its lag), there was a wait for it to get going, especially between shifts, but once it was going, it just went.
But with the new turbo, the wait is gone. However, trying to keep speed uphill has the transmission searching for the right gear much more often. I think this is because of the boost/power plateaus.

Does the turbo work, yes. Will I be in the next Fast and Furious movie, no. Is it as good as I expected, yes. I wasn't expecting it to be a Garret to begin with.

Let's be honest, I didn't expect a buggered turbo at 188k kms, but it happened. I got a non-genuine and chucked it in and hey, it seems to be ok so far.
I don't know if it's gonna blow up anytime soon, if it does, i'll be posting about it, if you don't see another turbo related post from me, it's probably still ticking along just fine.

When I had my turbo replaced, I noticed they’d removed the tiny filter on the MAP sensor pipe.
When I questioned him, he said most turbo problems come from running continuously overboosted. Those baby filters develop splits in the plastic housing, thus the MAP sensor reads low, tells the actuator to wind up more boost.
You’d never even notice the higher turbo noise as the engine is so noisy.

I ended up biting the bullet and purchased a CCT Stage One High Flow Turbo. The turbo that came with my new 1KZ-TE engine is leaking oil out of the return line and it looked a bit tired anyways. I havent seen any reviews on how the 1kz motor goes with these turbos so looks like I might have to be the one to report back on it. I'm not expecting much power gain from it until I get a Unichip installed and engine tuned but will see how it goes! I also have a 3" PPD exhaust, custom snorkel and intake system and 3 bar map sensor to bypass the fuel cut so it's possible I might see some gains. I'll report back soon!

              She's still running perfectly.
I haven't done any serious offroading / beach work yet so we'll see how that goes, but I have had the car loaded up and towed the trailer and she runs like a dream.
Given it's only been a few months we'll see what things look like a few years down the road.

Cool thanks for the update. For anyone interested in this turbo on the 1KZ motor, here's an update:

I've had mine in a month or so now. General performance is slightly better, especially from 0-70km/h and taking off from a couple of dangerous intersections ony daily drive has improved a bit. I feel like the fuelling is lacking and timing might be a bit outta whack too so I'm not seeing the best results from this turbo. I've got the Unichip Q4 sitting in my shed ready to go in. Just need to scratch some more money together to have to installed and the car finally tuned. Bring on tax return time!

When I first took the car for a test drive post install, I learned 2 thing's. 1. The 2000 Prado ECU took a while of driving to adjust to the new set-up. So the gains were not very obvious straight away. 2. I also accidentally at one point took the car for a run around the block with the air filter box disconnected and the car had MUCH more pull! So the factory air box is clearly a bottle neck. So I modified mine to allow more air flow and invested in a Unifilter (high flow filter).. Really happy with it so far.

Something interesting happened to me the other day.

I got a P1251 error and the car went into limp mode. 1251 is an overboost error.
It's scary as the car goes into limp mode.
I cleared the code, restarted the car and went about my business.
                  2 days later it reappeared.
After some googling, I sprayed the vane control arm with wd40, let it dry off, then sprayed some lubricant on it.

The error hasn't reappeared after that.
Apparently these errors are common on cars that have had aftermarket exhausts fitted too so it's not the turbo, it's the ECU having dramas.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Only just noticed you responded (over a year later haha).

Here is some info on that error code. Looks pretty common: https://www.baileysdiesel.com/p1251-toyota-fault-code

So a year and a bit later and my CCT turbo is still going strong. I've since had a bottom end rebuild and find I need less boost and less fueling (from the Unichip) for the same power which is great! No ECU dramas with mine.

Hey SamSta seems you would recommend a cct turbo, glad to hear it is going well. looks like I need mine replaced, seems a large variation in price for different brands. Can I ask where you bought the turbo from. I am in Qld. Cheers Rob
