    Re: PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP

    Hi Jaywindy. What a cockup! Might as well drain the oil and remove small inspection plate on sump. Get in there and have a good grope around or make up a scoop tool out of wire to help. At end of day you are going to have to find it somehow - no point in putting the dirty job off. Most garages have endoscopes now as they are really cheap and useful. If you cant get it yourself, get a mechanic to come over and have a fish around with his flash tool. Cheers, Derb.

      Hi

      Here is a 1kz engine with the rocker off. I take it it went down one of the holes on the drivers side?

      And here is the block with the head off and shows the big hole that it would have fell down

      Here is the bottom end showing what it fell past;

      As you can see there is not much in there for it get stuck or jam up.

        Wow- thanks for the photos tassie tiger, Yes those small 40mm holes is where it went down.

        I have just come in from working on it all night, i removed the small tin sump and hoped the gauge would be there, and it wasnt. I looked around in the exposed engine and couldnt see it, I got out and as i tilted the small sump a outline of a oil soaked feeler gauge emerged in the bottom of the small sump. I kept looking at it for a few seconds - i couldnt believe i had that pesky gauge back.

        So great news and thanks to everyone that helped. I certainly learned a valuable lesson the hard way, I will be covering up all holes if i ever do this again!

        I had trouble uploading a couple of pictures direct so they can be see here:

            Fantastic news!

            What do you think the point of the small sump pan is? What can you access engine wise once its removed, other than lost feeler gauges? :shock:

                Hi Tassie Tiger,

                Speaking as a novice mechanic, it appears to function as a small well of deep oil where the strainer sits that sucks up the oil . I suppose it is also a removable section that allows you to clean out any sludge that could accumulate at the lowest point.
                I was suprised that on mine it was pefectly clean inside- like brand new just a film of clean oil. (105000km).

                BTW. It is also is a retrieval method for lost feeler gauges, I wonder why it doesnt mention that in the toyota manual??? :wink:

                Just filled the oil back up tonite and re-installed the rocker cover, waiting for replacement Glow plugs to arrive b4 i can get it finished.

                Regards

                jeff
