Re: Rings busted, need short motor, engine overheated? WTF?

    Hi

I think I finally worked out what it is that seems strange.

As the pistons go up and down the area above the top piston ring does not wear as nothing is touching it. It also gets carboned up and gets blackened.

This is where it seems strange. I am sure that there are cross hatch marks on TOP of the unworn but carbon heat marked top of the bore. It looks like cross hatching extends from the wear area into the non wear area.

From the photo I would suggest it has been honed after running (after the factory).

    cheers

Can we get a photo of the other two cylinder bores? I assume the two pics are of cylinder # 3 and # 4?

As stated by a few the vertical scratches are from broken rings/damaged pistons. And yes the bore has been honed recently. I suspect that the dealer threw a hone in to see if the scores from the broken piston/rings cleaned up. No real mystery, he/she was checking if a new block was needed.

Re: Rings busted, need short motor, engine overheated? WTF?

Hi Fellas - I am with Random. In a past life I was a mechanic and the bore cross hatching you see is standard honing. And yes, the area which is unused above the top ring will also be honed from new. Giving a block a rough hone before going any further with a tear-down is common practice to highlite imperfections and assist with quoting on possible piston replacement. The carbon you see in this area is normal carbon/tar build-up. Vertical lines will be ring score. Whatever the manual states, change your oil at 5,000 km and dont skimp on quality. It is highly unusual for these engines to need cylinder work even after a head replacement due to overheating unless it has really been abused/nuked. Sometimes they will glaze the bore if not run in correctly (read given a good work out occasionally) and if the oil change intervals are extended. I would be really pissed if I didn't get around 500,000 km out of a block before work was required. Good luck. Cheers, Derb.

              Success in the CTTT!

              i am a happy man today :P :P

I had my hearing today at the Consumer Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (the old consumer affairs) NSW where I had lodged a complain against Toyota Australia for a Warranty dispute regarding my engine repairs.

I had the opportunity to sit down with the General Manager from the technical services division of Toyota Australia, and we were able to negotiate a mutually agreeable settlement

The matter has now been settled, out of court, with Toyota coming to the party for the cost of the parts, and I am paying for the labour.

I am pleased with the outcome, and can now get on with my life.

Here are a few points I have learnt, or had enforced to me over the last few months...

              1) Love your car, and look out for any signs of trouble
              2) If you think there is a problem, tell your mechanic and get advice. Be a little assertive.
              3) MAKE SURE YOUR MECHANIC FILLS OUT YOUR SERVICE BOOK PROPERLY, correct odometer, date and simple stuff!
              4) Although Toyota nowadays say change your oil every 10, 000km , DO it yourself every 5000km anyway because it is very cheap insurance for your engine.
              5) Always keep your receipts, file them away cause you just never know what may eventuate down the track.
              6) If you are having a dispute with Toyota over warranty, do your research, but be polite and reasonable and they will be likewise to you.

That's probably about all I can think of. I am pretty happy this morning because this has been over my head for about 4 months but has just been resolved this morning.

The first thing I did was bought my local mechanic a carton of beer, and his missus a bottle of champagne as a thank you for the time they spent compiling their records and providing affidavits on my belalf (maybe to cover their bums a bit too  )

Anyway its over now, and I am moving on.
