  • Lp GAS V6 Prado

    Good evening all

I am planning to buy a 2006 V6 auto prado GXL and would like to convert to gas, if it does not effect the motor reliability, life, or power output. Would my fuel savings be wiped out by increased maintenance and engine head rebuilds?

Do any readers have any experience with gas Prados. Is there a particular brand and type of gas system that people recommend.

What is the opinion of Toyota to gas conversion of prado's

    Thanks for any infomation

    Kevin

Hi, for what it's worth. I have a 2005 V6 running a Eymer vapour injection system.
Performance is almost the same as petrol and the fuel (gas) consumption is approx 16l per 100k. (mix of peak hour and outer suburbs driving). In my opinon any motor that is designed to run on unleaded should handle a gas conversion with no major drawbacks!

Why is it Crap ???? I have had my 2005 Prado on gas for 3 years now , still runs good. 62cents a litre beats 140 cents a litre hands down. Does not need any extra servicing , and ((( if you can't afford to run the car on petrol you can't afford the car))) is a bit rude you think ???

I have a 2005 Prado on gas for 2 years now and it runs fantastic. I have the new Liquid injection. At 63 cents is cheap motoring.
no extra servicing apart from changing the oil and filter every 5000k's. The best thing i have done...As for depreciation it will
happen ehethet it is on gas or not...so i might as well enjoy and pull back some of the depreciation from cheap motoring....

I have had my 2003 manual on gas for almost 4 years now, not one problem. Constantly do 400klm per week (50/50 city hwy) and near always uses 65L of gas and cost $38.00 per week + $25.00 of petrol per month (with woolies discount) happy as.

I have a 2006 auto and put lpg injection on it. I am an lpg installer and have lost count of the number of prados I have done. If the system is set up correctly to match your petrol injector mapping you won't have any probs and the power will be the same or better on gas.

What does a gas conversion cost and what is the best type?

                  hi Marc,
i converted mine two years ago. i installed the latest
liquid injection system, mine must have ben one of the first prado
to convert. it cost me $5200 minus the $2000 cash back..at the time
i did a full service and changed all the injectors to platinum and installed
the flush lube for peace of mind...after two years i have recovered my money (3000)
i save $30 a week for the mileage i do.

                    Hi Guys

Might want to take this into account, new fuel tax on LPG to be introduced from 1st December this year quoted from news article dated 27th May11

"Treasury officials confirmed in an estimates hearing this week that more than 600,000 taxis and motorists who run cars on gas will pay 20 per cent more under the planned new tax on alternative fuels, to be phased in from December 1.
It will add 2.5c to the cost of a litre of LPG per year until a peak of 12.5c per litre by 2015, so motorists who were encouraged to convert to LPG will end up paying more.
Treasury estimates suggest the tax will add only 19c to the average metropolitan taxi fare. LPG bowser prices would also continue to stay at about half that of unleaded petrol.
But the NSW Taxi Council claimed the excise would add at least 50 cents to the cost of an average 7km taxi journey.
Both LPG and CNG have been excise-free for the past 20 years because of their environmental benefits -- they have 13 per cent lower emissions than petrol."
                    FYI

I own a 2006 Prado V6 and I installed a gas system 3 years ago. the system I installed was an Impco. Results are fantastic, heaps of power and only $40 to fill it up. The installer said you dont even need to run flash lube as the car initially starts on fuel then automatically swiches over to gas. the switchover is seemless. car runs perfectly.

                      Cheers

As my father-law, a long time motor mechanic who owned and operated his own engine reconditioning shop for many years, used to say .... "gas is only good for BBQ's !" and "eventualy, the money you save running gas will come back to bite you in mechanical repair costs." I've seen a few heads that were cooked due to retro-fitting gas systems.

Each to their own, but I'll sick with petrol, besides the government is on track to make it just as expensive anyway.

Hi there Darce, I would have to disagree with you, yes it starts on petrol and flicks over to gas but its only running for a few seconds on petrol, this is not enough to keep the valve stem seals lubricated over time, for the sake of $50 I wouldnt hesitate on getting the flash lube kit installed. Each to there own but I will never go to LPG again, I had it on my old prado and was the worst thing I ever did sold the vehicle mainly due to it (plenty of trouble). Thats just me though, I had a bad experiance with it so has turned me off for good. I would like to see them when they have covered 200 + thou and then see wether any head issues arrise. It was my decision to go petrol over diesel this time (also had diesel prado) and will cop it sweet at the bowsers. Last tank I did 800k freeway driving the other 500 round town and achieved 12.6L per 100 out of my 4L V6, extremely happy with that and still have good touring range..........Regards Steve

Hey Steve. Just thought I'd let you know that I have already done over 100 000km since the gas installation. Valves are good with no noise, although I should do a backlash check to confirm. I am aware that heads on later model car engines have hardened valve seats which will prevent hammering/wear to a certain degree. The Impco system that I have ,as I am aware, is one of the few systems that run purpose made gas injectors as opposed to solenoid operated use of standard fuel injectors (I could be wrong here), this may be gentler on the engine. The system operates on fuel on startup and as engine warms fuel is shutoff automatically one injector at a time hence you can't feel the change over. Still, it might be worthwhile to install a flashlube. Seems there are a lot of gas systems out there, some may be great while others are not so. Thanks for the comment mate.

                            cheers

For what it's worth I had Liquid Injection fitted 50,000 km ago. No problems with it except occasionally runs a little rough on idle. Fuel consumption was 15.5 highway and 16.5 around town. The main draw back is 67 litre full tank gives a range of 370-405 depending on how I drive her. I fitted Pacemaker headers which has helped but then 32 inch Coopers which make her work a bit harder. Looking at 2.5 inch exhaust to inmprove breathing. I am able to fill past the 80% full mark and put 77 litres when travelling. I wouldn't recommend if leaving it that full O/night but it does take the range up another 50 km or so between drinks. You wait till it shut off then apply a little trigger pressure to get past and slowly it fills. Wont do it at all bowsers though. Bottom line well worth it I think.
